Michelle Buntain and Corina Harrison won the No. 1 doubles pool at the Pittsburg Invitational Thursday, leading Fort Scott High to a third-place finish.
Labette County won the tournament with 14 points followed by Pittsburg with 12 and the Tigers with 10. Fort Scott also had two third-place finishes from players called up from the junior varsity.
"We held out a few varsity players again due to some scheduling conflicts and again gave several of our JV players a chance to see some varsity action." Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. "Even with our substitutions, we were pretty competitive. Overall I was really pleased with the effort the girls gave in this tournament."
Buntain and Harrison (13-4) won their first two matches by shutout, sweeping Shyenne Hendry/Megan Smith of Iola and Zoe Foster/Stacy Derfelt of Columbus. They also defeated Jessica Curlee/Emily Baden of Pittsburg, 8-3, and Lora Nance/Elyse Merrit of Labette County, 8-5.
"Michelle and Corina came through undefeated, but not without a few problems," Barr said. "Against LC, they came out flat, not playing very well and fell behind 1-4 rather quickly. Fortunately they regrouped, got focused and won 7 of the next 8 games to close out the. They have a great deal of potential as a doubles team and just have to step up and play the way they are capable of in the coming weeks. They showed last year that they had potential. Now is the time to start living up to that potential."
Haleigh Whitten moved from No. 2 singles to the No. 1 slot and finished 2-2. She beat Katana Smith of Iola and Ashley Simpson of Columbus, both by 8-2 scores. Megan Reed of Pittsburg recorded an 8-4 win and Katie Anderson of Labette County defeated Whitten, 8-0.
Kandice Rost played varsity for the first time and went 2-2 in No. 2 singles. She beat Abby St. Clair of Iola and Alyssa Goodwin of Columbus, both 8-1. She lost to Katy Short of Pittsburg, 8-1, and Lakyn Baughman of LCHS, 8-2.
