No. 3 Butler downs 'Hounds, 43-12

Wednesday, September 7, 2011

EL DORADO -- Fort Scott Community College's football team scored on the first and last possessions here Saturday night.

In bet-ween those scores, No. 3-ranked Butler scored 43 points and gained 514 yards of total offense.

Luke Lundy scored for the Greyhounds (0-2) on a 47-yard run less than five minutes into the game. A pass play of about 50 yards set up Martese Jackson's 9-yard run with one second left in the contest.

This game counts for neither team in Jayhawk Conference standings due to Fort Scott's probationary status. Every Greyhound game is, in essence, a non-conference game this season as FSCC is ineligible for post-season play.

Butler (1-1) tied the score on a 3-yard run by Jasper Sanders with 4:44 left in the first period and went ahead, 7-6, on Connor Frazell's extra-point kick. Sanders scored again about 3 minutes later on a 16-yard run.

Transfer quarterback Chandler Whitmer hit Javess Blue from 74 yards away with 13:25 left in the second quarter to make it 21-6. Dreamius Smith ran in from 53 yards out with 3:17 left in the half. Smith transferred in from Kansas before the season as it was found he would be ineligible there this season. This was his first extensive action.

Derrick Thomas scored on a 1-yard run and D.J. Wakes ran in for a 2-point conversion in the third to make it 36-6. Whitmer hit Heath Train from 9 yards out with 9:25 left in the fourth to round out Butler's scoring.

Fort Scott gained 240 total yards but take out the three big plays and the 'Hounds averaged only 2.2 yards on their other 69 plays. Whitmer threw for 305 yards.

The 'Hounds travel to Independence Saturday night. The Pirates (0-2) have been outscored 133-0 this season.
