Freda Lavern Toepfer, 87, resident of Fort Scott, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2011, at Guest Home Estates in Fort Scott. She was born Nov. 26, 1923, in Fort Scott, Kan., the daughter of George Reno and Grace Koontz Reno.

Freda first married Jay Fry on Nov. 21, 1943, at Fort Scott. He preceded her in death on Dec. 20, 1974. She later married Earnest Toepfer June 12, 1983, at Hiattville, Kan.

Freda had worked in the housekeeping department at Mercy Hospital for over 25 years. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, doing puzzles and tending her flowers. She was a member of the Mt. Orum Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband Earnest, of the home; a son, Leon Fry and wife Sherral, Hiattville; three daughters, Ruth Shaffer and husband, Joseph, Harrisonville, Mo., Barbara Grimes and husband, Larry, Fort Scott and Janet Morris and husband, Jerry, Deerfield, Mo.; three step-daughters, Ernestine Hamilton and husband Matthew, Fort Scott, Becky Childers and husband, David, Casper, Wyo., and Laura Brown, Fort Scott.

Also surviving is a sister, Flora Smith, Lockwood, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Steven J. Fry, four grandchildren, four brothers and a sister.

Rev. Ron Murrow will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the Memory Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
