Mark Lee Scharenberg

Mark Scharenberg, age 59, a resident of Mapleton, Kansas, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, August 2, 2011, following a vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 69, south of Fort Scott. He was born April 16, 1952, in Marion, Kansas, the son of Orville Ray Scharenberg and Mary Anna Goertz Scharenberg. He was raised on the family's dairy farm. He graduated from Blue Mound High School with the class of 1970. He joined the National Guard in February of 1971, and served for six years. He married Debbie Ann Lindbloom on June 3, 1972, in Fredonia, Kansas. Mark held many jobs in his lifetime. Most recently he owned and operated his trenching and excavating company as well as Mapleton Gas Pipe Line, Inc. for the last twenty years. In his early years he worked one year for Jack Noah as a contractor in Altoona, Kansas. He worked for Windsor Mobile Homes for four years. He was employed by Ron Eldridge as a mechanic in Uniontown. He owned and operated the Mapleton Service Station for ten years. He served on the Uniontown U235 school board for seven years. He held office in the Timberhill Township. He served on the council and as Mayor for the town of Mapleton. He was a volunteer fire fighter. He also did work for both the Bourbon and Linn County water districts. Mark was certified as a Sports Pilot who built and flew his own planes. He was a member of the Kansas City Flyers club as well as the AOPA. Besides flying, he also loved to slalom water ski. He was a member of the Xenia Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and taught Junior Church. Mark took care of anything the residents of Mapleton called upon him to do. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife Debbie of the home; three daughters, Carrie Miller and husband Dustin, Hiattville, Kansas, Cristie Nelson and husband Matt, Edmond, Oklahoma, and Katie Armstrong and husband Billy, El Reno, Oklahoma; two brothers, David Scharenberg and wife Linda, Mapleton, Kansas, and Fred Scharenberg and wife Lori, Raytown, Missouri; two sisters, Mary Fay Lalman and husband Jerry, Mapleton, and Leta Hale and husband Jim, Hollister, Missouri. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, Trenton, Gavin, Hayden, and Korbin Miller; Adelee, Cooper, Brady, and Gunner Nelson; and William Armstrong; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two nieces, Jeri Lynn Lalman and Reesa Lalman Smith; as well as his mother.

Pastor Dan Mathew, Bro Gene Nelson, and Rev. Vernon Lindbloom will conduct funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 6, at the Grace Baptist Tabernacle, Fort Scott. Burial will follow in the Mapleton Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
