County begins road improvement projects, patch replacements

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

The Bourbon County Public Works Department will be working on several county roads replacing patches of broken asphalt beginning Wednesday.

Bourbon County Public Works Director Marty Pearson said the asphalt has broken apart and created soft spots as a result of the base material being damaged.

Of the several roads on tap for repairs, Pearson said the work on 240th Street, between Locust and Jayhawk roads, would be the most extensive because of the high traffic volume. He said the road will be closed to thru traffic for the duration of the repairs to protect the crew from the 500-600 vehicles that travel the road daily.

"It's a highly traveled road ... I can't have my guys watching all the cars," Pearson said.

The work on 240th Street, as well as repairs on Soldier Road, between 215th and 175th streets, are expected to take the longest amount of time with an estimated time frame of three to four weeks, Pearson said. Work will also be done on Quail Road between 235th and 265th streets and Yale Road between Kansas 31 Highway and 55th Street. Pearson said those two projects should take about four days each to complete.

Pearson said the crews will be removing the broken sections of asphalt and repairing the base material. Once the base material is fixed, crews will replace the asphalt. For more information on the road work, contact the Bourbon County Public Works Department at (620) 223-3800, ext. 20.
