To the Editor:

About four weeks ago, I contacted USD 234 school district regarding its hiring practices and policies and procedures. The school in particular I was inquiring about was Fort Scott Middle School.

I was informed by the superintendent, to contact the Middle School Principal directly. I was a little confused by that response because in my thinking, the superintendent of the entire school district should know the policies and procedures better than anyone. However, I abided with his wishes and contacted Mrs. Albright.

My letter was very clear in asking why the "promote" from within practice was not followed in filling positions at the middle school. See, if this procedure would not have been followed in the past then Mrs. Albright would still be the assistant principal and not the Principal. Just as Mr. Werling would still be the principal of Winfield Scott instead of the superintendent of the school district.

It appears to me, a person on the outside looking in, that the world is steadily making changes and everyone is growing but Fort Scott. We have a person of color in the White House, gay marriages approved in some states, men and women alike fighting in the armed forces but Fort Scott remains the same.

The people we entrust to educate and teach our children and future leaders of this world are the same people who seem to be "living in the 60's so to speak," living in an era when we used separate water fountains, had separate eating establishments and separate restrooms.

I'm sure my inquiry will ruffle many feathers. The feathers flying highest are the ones most likely guilty.

In this year of 2011, I think it's very important that Fort Scott try to do "The Right Thing" instead of continue doing "The White Thing."
