Robert H Smith, 92, of Leavenworth, Kan., passed away Tuesday, June 21, 2011, at St John's Hospital.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 24, at Davis Funeral Chapel.

A graveside service, with full military honors, will be held Saturday, June 25, in Barnesville, Kan., at 2 p.m.

Robert was born Sept. 7, 1918, in Linn County, Kan., the son of Floyd and Ella (Hopkins) Smith.

He was united in marriage on July 2, 1951, in Fulton, Kan., to Mildred Opal Messer. She preceded him in death on Jan. 20, 1999.

Robert graduated from Prescott High School in 1938 and assisted in the operation of his father's farm until enlisting in the Army, and serving with "F" Troop, 114th Cavalry, Pleasanton, Kan.

He was assigned to "D" Battery, 127th FA, 35th Division and served on the ship and gun crew, Command No. 1, 35th Transportation Corps in Sydney, Australia.

He received the Distinguished Unit Badge, American Defense Service Ribbon and a Good Conduct Medal.

After receiving an honorable discharge in 1945, he worked in various mechanic positions until moving to Leavenworth, and worked for the Allis Chalmers dealership.

He began working as a letter carrier in 1968 until retiring in 1979.

Robert enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an active bowler until his death.

He was a lifetime member of the Masons Nine Mile Lodge, Lansing, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, FOE Aries 55.

Survivors include one son, Michael Smith; one daughter, Kathy Smith Peterson (Bob Hart), two grandsons, Austin (Shannon) and Tyler Alefs; and great-grandson, Jackson Alefs.

He is also survived by his sister, Jeanne Smith Brittingham of Yakima, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Floyd Smith of Arizona.

Memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society or St John's Hospital, Leavenworth, Kan.
