Children of two Mercy Health Center co-workers are among 20 students in a five-state area named as recipients of the 2011 Charles Thoele Scholarship Program offered by Mercy. Recipients will receive $1,000 each to be used toward educational expenses at undergraduate and vocational-technical schools during the coming school year.

Jared Bahr, son of medical technologist Jerald Bahr, was named a scholarship recipient for the first year. Bahr attends Fort Scott Community College and is majoring in engineering.

Katelyn Dennigan, daughter of registered nurse Marilyn Lemmon, attends Fort Scott Community College and is majoring in the medical field.

The Charles E. Thoele Scholarship Program was established by Mercy in 1993 to honor Thoele, a retired Mercy executive and board member.

The program awards 20 $1,000 scholarships annually; 18 to dependents of Mercy co-workers and two scholarships to students from Sisters of Mercy-sponsored high schools. This year's recipients were selected from a pool of 184 applicants. They were chosen based on academic achievement and personal character, as demonstrated by participating in school and community activities, work experience, leadership qualities, awards and honors, goal setting, and personal and school references.
