Boys' defending champions: 6A -- Olathe East, 5A -- Hays, 4A -- Paola (2nd straight), 3A -- Garden Plain (2nd straight), 2A -- Bennington, 1A -- Ness City (2nd straight).

Girls' defending champions: 6A -- Olathe East (3rd straight; 1st sweep in 6A since Hutchinson in 2004), 5A -- Gardner-Edgerton, 4A -- Baldwin, 3A -- Rossville, 2A -- Olpe, 1A -- Victoria.

UNIONTOWN

Senior Emily Aikins won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes at Regionals. This is her third State meet although not all of her appearances have been in these events.

In the 100, Aikins' time of 12.68 in Regionals is the sixth-best mark. Defending State champion Imani Fenner of Wichita Independent (12.51) turned in the best Regional time of 12.33 and has turned in a Class 3A-best 12.30. Mandy Wilson of Rossville, fourth here last year (12.77) had the second-best Regional time of 12.38. Independent's Tina Liu took second (12.54) here last year and ran 12.52 in Regionals.

Aikins turned in a time of 27.35 in the 200 in Regionals, which is the ninth-best time. Wilson has the best Regional time of 26.05 but Fenner has the Class 3A-best time of 26 flat. Fenner ran 26.37 in Regionals and is the defending champ in this event (25.96). Wilson (26.06) was third at State last year.

Sophomore Trenton Miller has the ninth-best Regional mark in discus, 138' 3". Senior Brandon Koenigsman of Hutchinson Trinity has the best mark in Class 3A this year, 167' 3", and turned in the best throw of Regionals at 165' 5". He is the defending State champ (149' 4").

JAYHAWK-LINN

Senior Chelsea Beckman won her Regional in discus with a mark of 111 feet even. This is the ninth-best mark among State qualifiers. The best is from senior Dani Winters of Plainville, who had a mark of 139' 5", which is the best in Class 2A this season. Winters is the defending State champion, going 125 even in winning last year. Beckman took seventh here last year at 110' 1".

Beckman has qualified in discus all four years, placing higher each year. She was 14th as a freshman in 2008 and 10th in 2009.

Senior Shelby Krull (who won her Regional), Elbing Berean Academy sophomore Xannie Quiring, Kiowa County senior Adriell Hewitt and Washington County sophomore Megan Stegman tied for the second-best height in Regionals in pole vault as all cleared 9 feet. The best mark in Regionals was recorded by Republic County sophomore LaShae Hedstrom at 10' 5", which is the best mark in Class 2A all year. Hedstrom finished second last year at 10 feet even while Krull took fifth at 8' 6". Krull finished 14th in this event in 2008.

The Jayhawk-Linn girls' 4x100-meter relay team had the 13th-best Regional time, 53.60. Bennington, seventh here last year, has the best Regional time of 50.62 and the best time in Class 2A for the year at 50.40. Seneca-Nemaha Valley, last year's runner-up (52.08), had the second-best Regional time of 50.73.

Freshman Ashtynn Dixon finished second in her Regional in shot put at 31' 3 1/2". Winters, second in this event last year (40' 9 1/2") has the best Regional by far with a mark of 45' 3 1/4", the third-best mark in the state this year in any class at any meet.

Beckman's 27.30 in the 200-meter dash placed third in her Regional and is the 11th-best from all Regionals. Anna Petrowsky of Pratt-Skyline had the best Regional at 26.31. She finished third in Class 1A last year. Paige Krahl of Bennington has the best time in Class 2A this year, 25.50, but was only fifth-best in Regionals at 26.56.

Freshman Megan Leavitt took fourth in her Regional 1,600 meters in 6:10.40. The best Regional time was 5;26.90 from sophomore Jenna Farris of Lincoln, who is the defending Class 1A State champ. None of the 2010 Class 2A medalists returned to State this year and all but two runners at this year's State meet will be either a sophomore or a freshman.

Hargrove is making her first State appearance as she qualified in triple jump at 31' 0 1/2", which was fourth in her Regional. Defending champion Mariah Jones, a senior from Brookville--Ell-Saline, had a mark of 36' 8" at her Regional and won last year at 37' 5 3/4". Her best jump of the year is 36' 10 1/2".

Sophomore Austin Coleman won his Regional in javelin with a mark of 150' 4". Defending champion Mitchell Savage, a senior from Washington County, has the best Regional of 171' 4" followed by Republic County junior Dylan Grove at 170 feet even. Mitchell won State last year at 183' 11" but Dylan Reimer of Meade has this year's best overall throw of 184 feet even. Reimer has the third-best Regional mark of 169' 6".

Coleman was fourth in discus at 121' 1". Karlin Wiebe of Elbing Berean Academy, last year's State runner-up, had the best Regional at 154' 4".

PLEASANTON

Senior Lindsey Conn won three events at her Regional.

In the 100-meters, she turned in a time of 13 seconds flat, third best among all Regional times. In the 200, her time of 27.09 was also third best. Stephanie Caro, a senior from Satanta, had the best Regional times in both events -- 12.68 in the 100 and 26.71 in the 200. Caro has the best Class 1A time in the 100 this year, 12.49. Caro finished fourth in the 100 at State last year. Casey Freed of Scandia-Pike Valley has the best 200 time of 26.1. Pleasanton's Brittanie Marshall finished fourth in her Regional 100 in 13.90.

Conn's 400-meter time of 1:03.49 was 12th among Regional times. Freed, who is a freshman, had the best time of 59.33, the best in the class this year. Last year's runner-up, senior Taylor Kisner of Victoria, and third-place finisher, Kendra Zabrokrtsky of Hanover both return.

Sophomore Karesa Lewis finished second in her Regional 300-meter hurdles in 49.96 and fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.93. Senior Erin Merklein of Kiowa-South Barber, the defending champ in the 100s and runner-up in the 300s, had the best Regional in both events. She has a 46.13 in the 300s and 15.55 in the 100s.

All three girls' relays made it to State. Pleasanton's 4x100 time of 52.72 was ninth-best, the 4x400 time of 4:36.09 was 15th and the 4x800 time of 11:30.09 was 16th. The best times were recorded by Scandia-Pike Valley in the 4x100, 51.93, and 4x400, 4:13.09, and Coldwater-South Central in the 4x800, 10:04.27.

Sophomore Hannah Streeter cleared 4' 10" in high jump at Regionals. Senior Ashley Shearer of Cunningham is the defending champion. She cleared 5' 6" at Regionals and has gone as high as 5' 8". Sophomore Haley Strathman of Baileyville was last year's State runner-up and tied for the second-best Regional jump of 5' 4 with Erin Crawford-Kearn of Glasco.

As a freshman, Autumn Secrest cleared 6' 6' at Regionals last weekend. Mikayla Skidmore, a senior from Montezuma-South Gray who placed third in this event last year, cleared 10 feet even at Regionals. Kindal Deters of Centralia, fifth here last year, and defending champion Melinda Davis of Bucklin, each went over 9' 6" at Regionals and Davis won the event at 10 feet last year.

Preston Coffman cleared 12 feet in boys' pole vault at Regionals, which ties for fifth-best with three others. Senior Brady Tien of Logan, who was third at State last year, has the best Regional mark at 14' 6" while teammate Tracy Archer tied for second-best mark with Ashland's Eric Swonger and Centralia's Gale Nightingale at 12' 6". Swonger placed sixth at State last year.

Senior Reid Hein is in his first State meet, competing in shot put. His effort of 42' 5 3/4" was fourth in his Regional and 14th among the qualifiers. Clifton-Clyde senior Tyler Lambert finished third in the event last year and has the best Regional heave of 51' 4 3/4" and the best season mark of 54' 2 3/4". Logan Haug of Baileyville went 50' 3" at Regionals.
