100 YEARS AGO

(1911)

Yesterday and today were the busiest that City Weighmaster Shipp has had for some time. Much corn came in yesterday, as compared with the past few days, and at least 50 tons of hay were sold. It was the biggest days business for several weeks. The price of corn is hovering around 50 cents per bushel. Wheat is bringing around the 82-cent mark, though very little is being offered. Farmers say a nice little rain would be good.

The banquet committee of the high school alumni association decided to issue 400 invitations for the alumni banquet May 25. It was decided to have the affair at the Goodlander Hotel. An uptown agency will establish a place where graduates may pay their dues and become members of the association.

(1936)

Martin Miller, postmaster, announced today important changes in rural routes out of Fort Scott and Pawnee Station which will be effective June 1.

On account of a vacancy on route 4 by reason of retirement for disability of Claude S. Drary, and a second vacancy which will occur June 1 because James L. Stevenson, carrier on route 5 will retire because of age at that time. Present routes 1 and 2 will be combined into one route and will be known as route 1 with Charles B. Davis as carrier. Present route 5 will be combined with the southeast half of route 4 (old route 4) and will be known as route 5 with A. Frank Johnson as carrier. Present west and south half of route 4 (old route 7) will be combined with the present route out of Pawnee Station will be served from Fort Scott and will be known route 4 with Archie D. Nance (from Pawnee Station) as carrier.

50 YEARS AGO

(1961)

A Fort Scott sailor who witnessed the rescue of Allen B. Shepard Jr. from the history-making flight through space says crew members of the recovery ship considered their task just one of the everyday assignments when they first learned of their mission.

Here in Fort Scott for a few days' leave from the Navy is John W. Scammel. The gunner's mate third class is a crewman on the Naval ship Lake Champlain, which fished Shepard from the sea after the commander's space trip. Scammel is a seven-year veteran of the Navy. Scammel is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Scammel 14 South Hill.

The last performance of "Bernadine," annual production of FSHS debate members of the National Forensic League, will be presented tonight.

Randy Willard leads the gang of Gordon Zimmerman, Bill Frick, Shannon McMillen, John Campbell, Earl Vore, Don Madison and Phil Hammons. Others are Kay Sailors, Jane Zimmerman, Alta Cover, Sandi Simmons, Kathy Hewett, John Maycumber, Jim Feagins and Larry Sinn.

25 YEARS AGO

(1986)

Nine Fort Scott High School forensics competitors received I Ratings in state competition last weekend at Coffeyville. Top rated performances were by Teresa Gergory, Becky Hoffman, Michelle Smith, Chris Farmer, Nicole Smith, Gina Ames, Lori Epps and Karen Sherrell. Receiving II Ratings were Gina Ames, Jana Eshbaugh, Rex Wheeler, Pat Kerr, Curtis Clingerman, Paul Castrell, Tricia Barr and Cheryl Bates. In other weekend competition, Kirby Ham earned third place in poetry interpretation in the state speech championship in Salina.
