Wednesday, May 11, 2011

COLBY -- Fort Scott Community College's baseball team saw its season come to an end here Monday afternoon when the Greyhounds lost to host Colby at the Region VI West 2 Sub-Regional Tournament.

The Greyhounds (42-17) had to come through the losers bracket to reach the final after losing 9-3 to Butler in the opening round on Saturday. The Grizzlies (31-26) pounded out 17 hits in the victory.

Fort Scott played later Saturday against Highland in an elimination game. The 'Hounds trailed 7-5 after three innings but scored 5 times in both the seventh and eighth innings to avoid being bounced by the Scotties (24-31).

Earlier Saturday, Colby (41-18) defeated Highland 6-0. The Trojans came out in Sunday's first game and put Butler into the consolation bracket with a 5-2 decision.

Butler then had to turn right around and play Fort Scott again. This time, the 'Hounds jumped out to a 3-0 lead on its way to a 10-4 victory.

Fort Scott had to win twice in order to win the championship on Monday while Colby needed only to win once. At stake: A trip to the Region VI Finals in Wichita, which begin Saturday.

Fort Scott held a 5-3 lead after 5 1/2 innings. But Colby scored 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth as Greyhound pitchers issued 5 walks and hit a batter. The Trojans went on to earn their trip to Wichita with a 7-5 victory.

Colby will take on Garden City (40-20) in the first round Saturday afternoon. The Broncbusters upset Cowley at Arkansas City twice Monday. They won the first championship game 16-8, then beat the Tigers 9-7 in the second game of the East 1 Sub-Regional.

The other game features Neosho County (46-12) against Seward County (41-18). Neosho County defeated Johnson County in the East 2 championship game at Chanute Monday. Seward County beat Coffeyville 11-1 at Liberal in Monday's West 1 final.
