Devils down 'Hounds; Hutch first-round foe

Kansas City Kansas defeated Fort Scott Community College's men in the regular-season finale at Arnold Arena, 62-40, Saturday afternoon. It was the 12th time this season that the Greyhounds were held to fewer than 50 points.

The Greyhounds finished ninth in the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division and will be the No. 7 seed among the division's Division I teams. They will be at Western Division runner-up Hutchinson (24-6) tonight for a Region VI Tournament first-round contest.

Kansas City (15-4, 25-5) held a 6-0 lead as Kyle Sloan hit two 3-point baskets. But the 'Hounds (3-15, 5-25) got back within 2 when Alex Barber and Menas Stephens scored back-to-back baskets.

The Blue Devils went on a 29-4 run, hitting five 3-pointers along the way, that gave then control.

The 'Hounds scored 7 of the last 9 points of the half, which brought them within 39-16. They also scored 14 of the first 17 of the second half, getting within 42-30 with 13: 41 remaining.

Fort Scott was held to 10 points the rest of the way.

Kansas City made only 21 of their 55 total field-goal attempts but went 11-for-21 from 3-point range. Sloan, who led the Devils with 23 points, was 6-of-8 from 3-point land. Dennis Tinnon had 12 points and 15 rebounds for KCK.

Walton led Fort Scott with 14 points and Barner followed with 11. The 'Hounds shot 28 percent from the field on 16 of 58 and were outrebounded 50-31.

Tonight's contest tips off at 7 p.m. KSEK-FM has chosen to cover the women's game at Seward County but Hutchinson offers a webcast on its site at www.hutch.edu.

NOTES -- This will be the second consecutive season that Fort Scott has faced Hutchinson in the first round. Last season, the Blue Dragons took a 76-47 victory....
