Men's win streak stopped at two

Thursday, February 24, 2011

Highland prevented Fort Scott's men from a third consecutive victory by taking down the Greyhounds, 67-43, at Arnold Arena Wednesday night in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play. The 'Hounds had defeated Allen County Saturday and North Central Missouri Monday.

The Scotties (8-9 East, 18-11 overall) got 25 points from DeAndre Upchurch, who made six 3-point field goals on the night. Highland was 10- of 24 from 3-point range.

The 'Hounds led 7-2 early before Highland got its 3-point machine going. The Scotties enjoyed a lead of 31-19 with 2:12 left in the first half before the 'Hounds managed to narrow it down to 5 points with 10 seconds left.

Upchurch hit a triple for the Scotties as time expired in the half.

Fort Scott (3-14, 5-24) got within 37-31 on a Menas Stephens field goal with 14:48 left in the half. But an intentional foul away from the ball against the 'Hounds was the spark for Highland to go on a 14-2 run over the course of 6 minutes.

Alex Barner scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the 'Hounds who were forced to play several players out of position due to an injury suffered by point guard Julian Mills, who has missed the last three games. Teance Walton, helping out at "two-guard" instead of his normal small forward slot added 8 points for FSCC, which will host Kansas City Saturday.
