Johnson County sweeps Greyhounds

OVERLAND PARK -- Fort Scott Community College's basketball teams were swept by nationally-ranked Johnson County squads in a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader here Monday night.

Cavalier women, ranked No. 2 in NJCAA Division II, took an 83-37 victory. Johnson County men, ranked No. 14 in Division II, rolled to a 70-49 win.

Since Johnson County is a Division II school while Fort Scott plays in Division I, these losses won't affect the Greyhounds as far as post-season seeding is concerned.

Fort Scott's teams had similar games in which they competed well and were within shouting distance at the half but struggled to score in the second half. The women were outscored in the second half, 49-14, while the men were trumped, 28-17.

Greyhound women (4-8 East, 7-17 overall) shot only 33 percent from the field, making 15 of 46 field-goal attempts. They made on 6 of 23 fielders in the second half while Johnson County (8-4, 20-4) lit up the nets to shoot 63 percent on 19 of 30. The Cavaliers shot 48 percent for the game on 33 of 69 and outrebounded Fort Scott, 47-26.

Ashlie Baker was the only Greyhound in double figures scoring with 13 points. She made 5 of 10 shots from the field. Kerenza Singletary had 9 rebounds.

Liz Smith had a double double for Johnson County with 11 points and 16 boards. Amesha Kearney led the Cavs with 13 points.

Fort Scott's men (2-10, 3-20) shot almost 50 percent but attempted only 41 field goals in the game, making 20, and committed 24 turnovers.

Alex Barner led the 'Hounds with 16 points while Menas Stephens added 15. Ryan Magdziarz led Johnson County (6-6, 16-7) with 20 points. Tony Jones added 13 and Ryan Arel scored 12.
