Fort Scott's girls had only had two days off coming into a Southeast Kansas League make-up game at the "Tigerdome," as KOMB's Larry Gazaway has come to call it, Monday night. Visiting Coffeyville hadn't played since January 28.

That could have been a factor in how Coffeyville was able to hang with the Tigers for a bit over three quarters. But the Golden Tornado got into foul trouble and sent Fort Scott to the free-throw line 24 times in the final stanza. That helped the Tigers pull away and take a 42-36 victory.

Senior Megan McDermed played but did not start coming off her ankle injury. But it was classmate Kori Allen who helped the Tigers most as she had a season-high 14 points.

Her first 6 points were a pair of 3-point shots that in the final 1:15 of the first quarter that put Fort Scott (2-1 SEK, 8-7 overall) in front 11-9.

"Hopefully, that encourages her because we know she's capable of those kind of things," Fort Scott head coach Jeff Armstrong said. "She's had some games where she was frustrated because things weren't working out. But we told her to keep her chin up and keep working out and things will pan out."

Post players Mallory Shelton and Brianne Lawrence scored Fort Scott's back-to-back to start the second period. But the Nado (1-1, 5-9) held the Tigers scoreless the rest of the period. The play of Devin Cosper off the bench sparked her team as a pair of her transition buckets helped tie the score 15-15 at the half.

An 8-0 Nado run in the third put them up 23-19. But the Tigers got within one by the end of the period. Then Allen put the Tigers ahead, 27-25, with a 3-point goal.

Abbie Kritz tied the game for Coffeyville with a transition basket. But shortly after that, the Nado's foul troubles began and the Tigers marched to the charity stripe.

Fort Scott made only 11 of the 24 free throws but Coffeyville was hurt as much by the fouls it was collecting and eventually saw two starters foul out.

In addition to the free throws, Maddi Allen's stickback of a teammate's miss put the Tigers up 33-27 with 3:44 to go. In the final 2:37, they made 9 of 14 free throws.

Lawrence added 10 points for the Tigers, who went 18 of 34 at the free-throw line overall. Cosper led the Nado with 10 points.

Fort Scott outrebounded Coffeyville, 41-31, as Maddi Allen hauled down a season high 7 boards.

The Tigers will host Parsons tonight, weather permitting, in SEK action at 6 p.m. The Vikings (1-1, 7-7) defeated Iola, 46-43, in overtime Friday night and have won seven of their last nine games following an 0-5 start.
