'Hound women win at buzzer

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

CHANUTE -- Sophomore Kendra Mattox's layup with about 10 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winning basket in Fort Scott Community College's 50-49 victory over Neosho County in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play here Saturday night.

Greyhound men, despite 20-plus-point efforts from Robert Mason and Menas Stephens, fell to division-leading Neosho, 81-72.

Fort Scott held a 48-45 lead with 1:35 remaining but the Panthers claimed the lead on baskets by Sydnee Henderson and Abigail Herring.

Fort Scott High graduate Jolee Sharp finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Greyhounds (1-3 East, 4-12 overall), who won for the first time in conference play. Ashlie Baker had a personal-best 16 points for Fort Scott.

Neosho County (1-3, 3-13) dressed only six players and had to play the last 12 minutes with no substitutes after starting point guard Jamaica Campbell was called for a personal foul and then a technical foul, the latter counting as her fifth personal.

Fort Scott shot 39 percent from the field, making 21 of 54 field-goal attempts. Neosho County shot 42 percent on 21 of 50. But the Greyhounds dominated the boards, 44-24.

It's the second time this season FSCC's women have won when scoring 50 points or fewer.

Neosho County men 81, Fort Scott 72.

Menas Stephens scored 25 points and Mason added 22 for the Greyhounds (1-3, 2-13). But no other 'Hound had more than 7 points.

Fort Scott made half its shots from the field on 24 of 48 but Neosho County (4-0, 10-6) made 8 more field goals and 5 more 3-point shots. Those numbers were enough to cancel out an 18-of-25 performance FSCC had at the free-throw line.

Trey Anderson led Neosho County with 25 points on 10-of-20 shooting. Brison White added 14 for the Panthers while Devin Crabtree chipped in with 11.

Fort Scott's teams host Independence Wednesday night at Arnold Arena. Indy's women lead the East and are ranked 11th in the NJCAA Poll. Pirate men are one of four teams tied for second in the East behind Neosho County.
