'Hound men rally for win; women's comeback falls short

PARSONS -- Fort Scott Community College's men returned from nearly a month off to rally for a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division victory over Labette, 61-57, here Wednesday night. It was the Greyhounds' second victory in their last three games.

Fort Scott's women also rallied from a halftime deficit but the 'Hounds were not able to hold one once they got the lead and Labette took a 57-54 conference win.

A pair of free throws from Robert Mason, who led all scorers with 17 points, gave Fort Scott the lead for good with just over three minutes to go, 54-52.

The 'Hounds (1-2 East, 2-12 overall) defeated Labette for the second consecutive time by controlling the boards, 43-38, and holding the Cardinals (0-3, 2-13) to 9-of-31 field-goal shooting in the second half.

Fort Scott outscored Labette 18-5 to start the second half, holding the Cards to 1-of-13 shooting in the first 10 minutes.

The 'Hounds scored the first 6 points of the half to tie the score at 32-32. Then Mason gave Fort Scott its first lead since an early 2-0 advantage with a 3-point shot at the 16-minute mark.

Mason's transition basket capped the run with Fort Scott ahead 44-37. Labette fought back and tied the score, 52-52, on Terrance Smith's stickback with 3:28 remaining.

Teance Walton, who added 16 points for FSCC, made it a two-possession game with just over a minute to go with a transition basket that made it 60-56. Labette got within three when Ritea Acosta made one of two free throws with 57 seconds left.

Menas Stephens added 13 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for the Greyhounds, who shot 41 percent from the field on 20-of-49 field-goal shooting. The 'Hounds also made 16-of-31 free throws while Labette was only able to get to the charity strip 11 times, making 6.

The Cards shot 35 percent for the game on 23 of 66. Acosta led Labette with 13 points and hauled down 10 rebounds. Tavion Fleeks scored 12 points but was just 5-of-19 from the field. Alex Smith finished with 11 points.

Alex Barner led FSCC on the boards with 14 rebounds. Julian Mills dished 5 assists.

Labette women 57, Fort Scott 54.

The Greyhounds failed to score for the first 10 minutes of the game in falling behind 9-0.

But Fort Scott outscored Labette 12-0 in the first 5 minutes of the second half to get within 29-28. Christina Hammer made two free throws -- her only points of the evening -- to give the 'Hounds their first lead, 34-33, with 13 minutes to go.

Ashlie Baker took a pass from Jolee Sharp a couple of minutes later to put Fort Scott (0-3, 3-12) up by its widest margin, 36-33.

Labette (2-1, 5-10) went on a 14-2 run moments later to go up 49-39. The lead was still 10 points, 53-43, after Freddie Sims made a basket with four minutes to go.

Fort Scott scored 11 of the next 13 and got within 55-54 with 1:03 to go on Sharp's basket off a Labette turnover.

The Cardinals burned the clock but turned it over with 31 seconds left on a shot-clock violation. But Raven Taylor stole a pass and took it in to make it 57-54 with 10 seconds left. The 'Hounds still had a chance to tie but missed a pair of shots.

Sharp and Baker scored 12 points each for the Greyhounds. Sharp also had 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Sims and Tesia Danner scored 14 points each for Labette.
