He was born April 20, 1938, in Fort Scott, Kan., the son of Robert B. Caldwell and Ida Rebecca Thomas Caldwell.
He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.
He first married Doris Duncan in 1960. They were later divorced.
He later married Gladys Norton McCurdy. She preceded him in death in June of 2008.
Lyle had worked in the construction industry.
Survivors include five daughters, Rebecca Cowlishaw and Cheryl Cowlishaw, both of Fort Scott, Kan., Gail Windsor, Kansas City, Mo.; Deana Butler, Fulton, Kan., and Jeanie Mataya, Roseburg, Ore.
Also surviving are three sisters Wilma Wescoat, Las Vegas, Nevada, Marge French, Baldwin City, Kan., and Carol Jean Graham, Olathe, Kan.; 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Following cremation, VFW Chaplin, James R. Stradley will conduct graveside services at 2:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at the U.S. National Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Family and friends may meet at the Cheney Witt Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery at 2:15 p.m., on Friday.
Services are under direction of the Cheney Witt Chapel 201 S. Main, Fort Scott, Kan.
