Fort Scott High's girls outrebounded Labette County by 17 in their non-league contest at the FSHS gymnasium Tuesday night. But none of them were more important than Megan McDer-med's last one of the night.

The score was tied with 18 seconds remaining. McDermed stole the ball, drove to the other end but missed a layup. However, she hustled and tipped the rebound out of bounds off a Labette County player.

Fort Scott head coach Jeff Armstrong called time out and drew up a play. LCHS head coach Kristi Snider called time out and drew up a defense for the play.

With six seconds remaining, McDermed threw the inbound pass to Mallory Shelton, who drove but missed a layup.

However, McDermed had stepped in to clear out for a possible weak-side rebound. And she was there for it, putting it back up and through the net to give Fort Scott a 40-38 victory.

"I don't even know how she got to it," Armstrong said. "She just finds a way. That's just her. She finds a way to do the things we need her to do."

Fort Scott's record improved to 2-2 and this victory lessened the sting from a loss on a similar play to Drew Central last Saturday at the Willard Tri-State Classic.

"I really am proud of the girls and happy for them to get a win like that because this is our fourth close one," Armstrong said. "We had a heartbreaker in the last game to beat us. It's nice to be on the other end."

Fort Scott's four games this season have been decided by a total of 12 points.

Early on, it looked as though Fort Scott might roll. The Tigers held LCHS (1-1) to 2-of-13 shooting in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 16-8 lead. The Grizzlies closed that gap to 25-18 by halftime.

Turnovers became a problem in the second half and LCHS took advantage. An 8-0 run, the last 5 points by Shelbie Foister, tied the score at 27-27 with 4:57 remaining.

The Tigers scored the next 5. But LCHS took the lead, 34-32, on a 7-0 run capped by a steal taken in by Morgan Workman. Katren Rienbolt tied the score with a transition layup at the end of the period.

It took over 7 1/2 minutes before a field goal was recorded in the fourth quarter when McDermed's layup tied the score at 37-37.

LC's Stormy Smith made one of two free throws with 50 seconds left. McDermed rebounded the miss. She was fouled with 22.7 seconds to go but also made just the first free throw, which tied the score at 38-38.

McDermed led Fort Scott with 13 points and also had 4 steals and 7 rebounds. Brianne Lawrence, who got her first start, added 9 points and 10 rebounds.

Workman led Labette County with 12 points while Foister finished with 10.

Fort Scott shot 44 percent from the field, making 15 of 34 field-goal attempts, and outrebounded LCHS, 37-20. The Grizzlies shot 29 percent on 11 of 38.

JUNIOR VARSITY -- Labette County defeated Fort Scott, 47-27, in the JV contest. Delane Gray led the Tigers with 8 points.

The Tiger JV will host a four-team round robin tournament with one game for each team Thursday and two on Saturday.

All Tiger teams will host Pittsburg Friday in another non-league contest. The varsity game is set for a 6 p.m. tip-off at the FSHS Gymnasium.
