Annual girls' get-together: Part two

Tuesday, November 9, 2010

Continuing our 'girls' fall get-together, by the time we arrived at daughter Susie's house in Middleton, the other two gals down that way, Deb from Middleton and Claudette from Sun Prairie had also arrived. After putting away our "gear" we all sat around and gabbed and caught up on all the news from each gal since our last get-together.

Before we knew it, it was time to start thinking of what to fix for supper. Renn piped up and said, "I have brought the 'fixin's' for supper."

Renn always has a huge garden and she had brought umpteen vegetables to fix a baked vegetable supper. She also brought the huge baking pan to bake everything in. By the time she had it full of potatoes, onions, peppers, squash, carrots, and who knows what, it looked like enough for an army.

As it baked the house began to take on a heavenly smell, the more it baked, the hungrier we became. We were sure there would be much too much, but after everyone had at least two helpings, we had made a huge dent in it.

Then Renn brought out her famous cheese cake. Let me tell you folks, it was to die for. I don't know what all it had in it, but I do know she said there were four eight ounce packages of cream cheese, coconut and chocolate. We all said we would be able to eat two servings, but after one, we were so full and it was so rich, that we could hardly waddle after such a humdinger of a meal.

We all headed into the front room for our annual night of "chick flicks." Most of the gals had brought some of their favorite movies to share.

So ... Susie went through the many selections and we all decided our first movie would be "New In Town" with Rene Zellweger and Harry Connits, Jr. It was supposed to take place in Minnesota, but it was actually filmed in Winnipeg, Canada. Parts of it were filmed when it was actually 40-50 degrees below zero. It is a comedy and absolutely hilarious. We still had plenty of time and no one was sleepy so our next choice was "Quigley Down Under" with Tom Sellick. Every one had seen it at least once, but it was a favorite and we all enjoyed it again. By the time it was over, we could hardly keep our "peepers" open and called it a night and straggled off to bed.

The next morning Susie and I were the last ones up, the other gals (I like gals much better than senior citizens) had been up for quite some time, and were already on their second pot of coffee.

For breakfast we had banana nut bread that I had brought and a platter of several kinds of huge muffins, string cheese, juice, fruit and many cups of coffee. We then sat down to map out our adventure for the day.

We had all agreed that it would be a shopping day. Susie began to tell us all of the many choices where we might like to go, and gave us several suggestions for where we might like to eat lunch. Now you all know that it takes time for a woman to make up her mind, now think six women, so after much discussion we were finally ready to take off. I thought I would get this all finished in this column, but I can now see that "just ain't gonna happen."

Hopefully I can bring it to a finish next week.
