Indy upset of Coffeyville changes playoff picture

Monday, October 25, 2010

Independence upset No. 8-ranked Coffeyville, 14-10, at Independence Saturday night and made the Region VI Playoff picture a bit more complicated for the teams fighting to finish fourth and may have eliminated Fort Scott.

Independence improved to 3-3 in the Jayhawk Conference (3-5 overall). Fort Scott, Garden City and Highland are all 2-4. The Greyhounds (2-6) were idle last week. Garden City (3-5) defeated Dodge City, 29-3, in confeerence play. Highland (2-6) was bombed by Air Force Prep in non-conference action, 56-0.

Indy can finish third if the Pirates beat Garden City Friday night at Independence and Coffeyville loses to Hutchinson on Saturday. The Red Ravens can not finish lower than fourth, so the playoff field would be set. Butler has clinched the No. 1 seed while Hutchinson currently sits second. If Coffeyville beats Hutch, the Red Ravens will finish second and Hutchinson will be third.

If Garden City and Fort Scott win their games, Indy, Garden and the 'Hounds would all be 3-4. Indy has the victory over Coffeyville and Garden City would have victories over the Pirates and the Greyhounds. There does not appear to be a scenario that favors FSCC, which is 1-1 against the other two.
