No. 5 Eagles sweep at Pleasanton

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

PLEASANTON -- Uniontown's volleyball team, ranked No. 5 in Class 3A by the Kansas Volleyball Association, swept Pleasanton and Crest in a Three Rivers League triangular here Tuesday night while the host Blu-Jays were able to salvage a split by defeating Crest.

The Eagles (7-1 TRL, 23-2 overall) beat Crest by scores of 25-11, 25-3. Jacy Ermel recorded 10 kills and Tayler Shook was credited with 16 assists.

Pleasanton swept Crest 25-12, 25-22. Megan Lowe had 8 kills for the Blu-Jays (2-2, 8-15) and Johnnea Saulsberry dished 8 assists. Saulsberry was also credited with 3 blocks and Brytnee Streeter had 3 digs.

"I stressed all week how important this match with Crest was for league standings," Pleasanton head coach Danny Looney said. "The girls responded and came out with a ton of energy."

Uniontown defeated Pleasanton, 25-9, 25-9. Ermel had 5 kills for the Eagles while Shook and Lauren Rockhold each had 7 assists.

"The girls did a good job of playing our game," Uniontown head coach Jackie Hall said. "We are seeing improvements on our coverages and communication."

Lowe had 4 kills for the Blu-Jays, Saulsberry dished 4 assists and had 2 blocks and Teal Baker came up with 10 digs.

"Don't let the score fool you," Looney said. "Team-wise, we did some good things. Uniontown is very deserving of their 3A ranking. We play in a pretty tough league where we have two state-ranked 3A teams. Hopefully, all the tough competition we have faced this year will pay off for us in Sub-State play."

In the latest poll, Phillipsburg (26-1) is on top of the Class 3A rankings followed by Atchison County (22-1) and Osage City (26-2), all in the same order as last week. Kismet-Southwestern Heights (25-2) makes its first appearance in the poll, jumping over the Eagles to No. 4.

Both Pleasanton and Uniontown will play in Uniontown's annual home tournament Saturday with play beginning at 8:30 a.m. The Eagles and Blu-Jays are in opposite pools.

Each match after the openers will five minutes after the conclusion of the previous match.
