CHANUTE -- Fort Scott High School's junior varsity tennis team played its final tournament of the season here Monday with its No. 1 doubles tandem of Ashlyn Baugher and Bailee Hall taking first place.
Baugher and Hall won all three matches they played in the eight-team bracket format. They defeated Alexis Ethridge/Tiffany Dillow of Chanute Gold, 6-0, Brea Harris and Kelsey Jump of Parsons, 6-2, and Alexis Thurston/Sarah Hernandez of Chanute Blue, 6-5 (7-5).
"Ashlyn and Bailee had a solid tournament," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. "The Chanute team played very well in the championship match and really forced us out of what we wanted to do, but the girls kept their heads and just played solid tennis to come from behind and take the match in a tiebreaker."
Brittany Burns and Kandice Rost took second place in No. 2 doubles. They defeated Kliska and Lopez of Independence, 6-3, and Jessica Nickelson/Bailey Foster of Parsons, 6-1. Pittsburg's Olivia Laidler/Laikyn Long won the finals, 6-5 (7-1).
Hannah Messer took second place in No. 2 singles. Also in No. 2 singles was teammate Jasmine Davis, who was brought over to help create a sixth team, which was dubbed "SEK" for the tournament so there would not be any byes.
Messer defeated Davis in the first round, 6-5 (10-8). Messer went on to beat Pittsburg's Brittany Wilde, 6-3, in the semifinal. She lost to Pittsburg's Jennifer Nickelson in the final, 6-5 (7-5).
Davis lost to Haley Ackridge of Chanute Blue in the consolation semifinal, 6-4, but won the seventh-place match over Haley Markham of Chanute Gold, 6-3.
Krista Hightower was a hard-luck 0-3 in No. 1 singles as she lost two of her matches by 6-4 scores. The first was to Chanute Blue's Breianna Brooks in the first round. Megan Reed of Pittsburg followed with a 6-3 win. Beth Ungles of Chanute Gold won the final match.
The JV played in a dual against Nevada Tuesday afternoon, which was their final action of the season.
