George Joseph Meiwes, 83, of rural Moran, Kan., died Monday, Sept. 27, 2010, at his home.

George was born May 19, 1927, in rural Okarche, Okla., the son of Steve and Margaret Ann (Rausch) Meiwes. He grew up in the Canadian County, Okla., area.

On Oct. 7, 1947, George married Gertrude E. Lagaly in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Union City, Okla. They made their home in Oklahoma until 1956 when they moved to the panhandle of Texas. In 1967, they made their home on a farm northwest of Moran.

George enjoyed his family and caring for his cattle and crops.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Iola, Kan.

Survivors include his wife of almost 63 years, Gertrude Meiwes of the home; three sons: George Meiwes and wife, Janet of Moran, Kan.; Paul Meiwes and wife, Becky of Iola, Kan.; and Gene Meiwes and wife, Karen of Iola, Kan.; four daughters: Margie Clements and husband, Jim of Dumas, Texas; Ann Weston of Moran, Kan.; Karen Rickson and husband, Steve of Tuscon, Ariz.; and Janet Phillips and husband, Dave of Olpe, Kan.; one daughter-in-law: Michelle Meiwes of Moran, Kan.; one brother: Steve Meiwes and wife, Pat of Hereford, Texas; two sisters: Bernita Berntsen of LaHarpe, Kan.; and Margaret Eddie and husband, Bob of Yankton, S.D.; 23 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Frank and Edward Meiwes, son-in-law Donald Weston, brother Henry Meiwes, sisters Elizabeth Reherman and Marie Sigl and by two infant siblings.

Visitation will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010 at St. John's Parish Center in Iola, Kan.

The parish rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, followed by the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., both at St. John's Catholic Church in Iola, Kan.

Burial will be in the Moran Cemetery, Moran, Kan.

Memorials are suggested to St. John's Catholic Church or Parkinson's Foundation. Memorial gifts may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
