New No. 1 for 2nd straight week

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

For the second consecutive week, the No. 1 team in the nation will be different.

Previous No. 1 Arizona Western suffered a 20-9 loss to then No. 14-Glendale last week and was dropped all the way down to No. 11 in this week's poll. Mississippi Gulf Coast (3-0), a 31-24 victor over Jones County last week becomes the No. 1 team since the final poll of the 2007 season, in which it was named co-national champion with Butler.

Butler (4-0) is No. 2 in this week's poll. And with Hutchinson (4-0) at No. 4 and Coffeyville (3-0) at No. 5, it's the first time three teams from the same conference have been in the top 5 since Sept. 28, 2004. In that week's poll, three teams from Mississippi (Pearl River, Northwest Mississippi and Hinds) were in the top three.

Ellsworth (Iowa) is No. 3 in the poll at 4-0 and is the only one of the top five that faces another ranked team this week as the Panthers have to travel to Grand Rapids, which is tied for 11th with Arizona Western, for a Midwest Football Conference game.

No other Jayhawk Conference teams are ranked. Iowa Western is at No. 6 followed by Blinn at No. 7, Navarro No. 8, Glendale promoted five spots to No. 9 and Northwest Mississippi at No. 10.

No. 5 Coffeyville, coming off a bye week, visits Fort Scott at 1 p.m. Saturday.
