Another fourth for golfers; Tigers second in SEK

Fort Scott High's girls' golf team finished fourth yet again in a tournament, this time at the Parsons Invitational on Monday.

This was also the second of the three Southeast Kansas League designated tournaments, although some non-league teams were invited to make the field a little more challenging as only five league schools field girls' teams.

This was the first time the Tigers have played the KATY Course in Parsons, finishing third with a four-woman, 9-hole score of 213, beating Columbus for fourth by having the better score by the No. 5 golfer.

"The girls did extremely well," Fort Scott head coach Karen Curran said. "Posted our best team score for the last two seasons! A great team effort! We finished fourth yet again, but we were finally able to beat Parsons and Columbus and got closer to Girard."

Non-league Caney Valley won the team title with a 193. Chanute came in second at 199 follwed by non-league Girard at 200.

In league standings, Chanute is 42 strokes ahead of the Tigers with a 404 after two tournaments to Fort Scott's 443. Columbus is two strokes behind at 445 and Columbus is fourht at 459. Because Pittsburg didn't field a full team at the first SEK tourney, which was held at Fort Scott Sept. 7, the Purple Dragons don't have a team score in league play.

Kacie Brown finished in fifth place in the tournament with a score of 47. League leader Taylor Gard of Chanute was the tourney winner at 36, two strokes below par.

"Kacie is playing really consistent right now," Curran said. "She still has room to improve her game in the last half of the season, but am happy where she is right now."

Devan Lloyd finished in 10th place at 49. Riley Wunderly's 57 Ashleigh Marquardt's 60 rounded out the team score. Morgan Robertson shot 66 for the Tigers and Hayley Kruse shot 71.

"Devan went down and played the course over the weekend and it really paid off for her," Curran said. "She shot a new personal best and broke 50. She's beginning to find her groove and it couldn't come at a better time. Still time in the next few weeks to fine tune a few things and get ready for regionals."

Gard has a score of 79 after two tournaments. Pittsburg's Maggie Sloan is second at 85 with Brown third at 95. Lloyd is fifth in league standings at 103.

The Tigers will play an 18-hole tournament at Pittsburg's Crestwood Country Club Tuesday. The last of the three league tournaments will be held at Columbus Sept. 30.
