Longview sweeps 'Hound volleyball

Monday, September 20, 2010

Longview (Mo.) swept Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team at Arnold Arena Monday night in non-conference play, 25-15, 25-20, 25-17.

The Lakers seemed especially focused on not letting Katie Van Lue, the Greyhounds' best hitter, beat them. Van Lue finished the night with just 7 kills, four of which came in the second set.

The 'Hounds (2-10) competed well in the first two sets. They trailed just 9-8 in the first set but Longview went on an 8-1 run that gave the Lakers control.

Fort Scott rallied from an early deficit in the second set and scored seven consecutive points to take a 12-8 lead.

The 'Hounds held a 17-14 lead but lost their momentum. Longview went on a 9-1 run as the Lakers rallied and went on to win the second set.

Three ace serves on the first four points of the third set kick-started a run that saw Longview take an 8-0 lead in the third set. The Greyhounds did manage to get back within 9-4 but the hole proved too deep to climb all the way from.

Kayla Tarwater had 5 kills for the 'Hounds. Tanessa Esry dished 8 assists and Paige Clinton dealt out 5. Van Lue had 4 blocks and 2 aces. Jessica Cook had 5 blocks.

Things will not get any easier for the Greyhounds as Cowley, the No. 2-ranked team in NJCAA Division II, will visit in Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division play Wednesday night at 6:30.

NOTES -- KJCCC-East member Johnson County is currently ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II....
