PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott High School's volleyball team split a non-league triangular here Tuesday, falling to Southeast Kansas League rival Chanute but defeating host Colgan.
Chanute defeated the Tigers, 24-26, 25-21, 25-17. Mallory Shelton had 4 kills and 3 blocks. Kelsey Middleton had 3 kills. Kenzie Heatherly recorded 5 assists and 3 aces. Caitlin Shorter also had 5 assists.
"Chanute had a couple of big hitters," Fort Scott head coach Carol Bingesser said. "They were very steady on defense made very few mistakes. We really struggled passing, so our setters struggled because of the passing and consequently we couldn't hit because we couldn't get a good set. In the first game, we battled back and won, but then our passing went south in the third game and we really struggled with serve receive."
Chanute defeated Colgan in two games in the middle match.
The Tigers (4-1) then bounced back for a 25-21, 25-17 sweep of Colgan. Shelton had 4 kills. Heatherly had 6 assists. Marliss Allen served 3 aces while Megan McDermed and Kori Allen each served two.
"Our passing improved in Colgan game, so we were actually able to get better hits and a few kills," Bingesser said. "We need to work on passing overall. "
The Tigers are back on the court this evening as they travel to Iola for another non-league triangular. Prairie View rounds out the list of opponents. The first match begins at 5 p.m.
