Cathey waives preliminary hearing

Joseph Cathey, a suspect in the May 6 murder of Dennis Gibbs, made an appearance in the Associate Circuit Court of Vernon County on Thursday, Aug. 5. Cathey waived his right to a preliminary hearing and was bound over to the 28th Judicial Circuit Court and ordered to appear before Judge James R. Bickel for arraignment on Aug. 10.

Cathey, 24, has been charged with first degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Gibbs' death. Gibbs' body was found behind his pickup at the intersection of Z Highway and Katy Track Road in rural Vernon County, near Richards. Gibbs had been stabbed and shot numerous times.

Cathey was arrested in Bourbon County, Kan., on Thursday, May 6, and later transferred to the Vernon County Jail where he is being held without bond. Cathey is represented by public defenders, Kyla Moorehouse and Joseph Zuzul.
