Fireworks Festival at Arcadia all day Saturday

The Oskaloosa Free Will Baptist Church will present the First Annual Fireworks Festival in Arcadia on Saturday beginning at 2:30 p.m. with a turtle race. A three-legged race will be held at 3:30. Relays and foot taces will be held at 4:30. At 5:30, there will be a free dinner in the Community Center withhamburgers, hot dogs, chips and soda. A cake and pop walk begins at 7:30 to be followed by an entertainment and talent show. All these events will take place in front of Community Center until 10:00 p.m., when the fireworks display will take place at the Arcadia Ball Park. Bring your lawn chairs. The church will appreciate donations of cakes and two-liter bottles of soda.

Among the 27 graduates announced by Fort Scott Community College this summer are two from Arcadia, namely, Robert Wesfall and Vickie Sheehy.

Clint and Jennifer Ryan, Liberal, Mo. announce the birth of their daughter, Emily Anne, May 6, 2010. Haley Ryan is her sister. Maternal Grand parents are Dennis Totman, Arcadia and Jack and Connie Bright, Mulberrry. Great Grandparents are Richard and Shirley Culbertson, Arcadia and Buddy and Micky Ryan, Mulberry. Paternal Great Grandmother is Wauneta Dohle, Oskaloosa, Mo.

Mathew and Ashley Shead of Joplin, Mo., pitched their tent in a campsite last weekend, rented two kyaks and enjoyed a floating trip for a special vacation time.

Archie Day and his daughter, Sarah, came from Northern California to visit his aunts, Mildred Michie and Vera and John Parrish in Pittsburg. They also included visits with cousins, Wayne and Christie Parrish, Arcadia and Janet, Mark and Tara Van Leeuwen in St. Paul; Kathy and Dan Cherry, Pittsburg; and Diana and John Hart of Girard.

Karen Mizer brought the new address of her son Sam, who went into the Army soon after graduation from Northeast High School, to church Sunday morning . He will be happy to hear from his friends. Cherry Grove Baptist Church invites friends to its 4th of July Celebration at 6:00 p.m. The church is located at 2468 Cavalry Road, just off U.S. 69.

Ashton and Wade Bright from Oklahoma spent last week in Arcadia visiting their Grandparents, Donald and Terry Bright and attended Arcadia Christian Church on Sunday morning.

Thanks to Jessie and Hardy Dunn who sent news of a former Arcadia boy who became a beloved athletic coach in Wichita. Donald Bowin, an Arcadia High School graduate in 1945, was a teacher and the the girls' basketball coach at Wichita East High School. He died Wednesday, June l6, 2010, at the age of 82. His parents, Charlie and Rose Gust Bowin with Donald lived for many years on S. Ohio Street in Arcadia not far from his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Gust. His Dad was city electrician in Arcadia for many years. Don's mmorial service was held Monday, June 21, at Broadway Mortuary Chapel in Wichita. A memorial has been established in the name of Don Bowin with the Wichita State University Foundation in support of women's athletics.

Larry and Vickie Shead left early on Thursday morning for a special 38th wedding Anniversary celebration. Near the town of Moran, the car failed, so they called son Mark Shead in Fort Scott who rescued them and took them back to the farm to start again in their van. Larry surprised Vickie by taking her to Yoder, Kan., which is a small town near an Amish settlement, to a Bed and Breakfast. There they enjoyed shopping and learning history of the place.

On Saturday, they went to Wichita to meet daughter Maria Shead and Clayton Whitson and his parents for a special dinner and visiting. Back home on Saturday night, they learned the dead car needed a fuel pump.

In celebration of Portie Corporon Hughes'85th birthday, her family met for an outing in Branson, Mo., on June 18, 19 and 20. Family members celebrating with her were Belinda and Brian Amerman, Bridgeport, Texas; Daya and Donald Robertson, Anjali and Ellora, Lincoln, Neb; Steve and Sandy Hughes, Nathan Hughes and Karsen, Arlington, Texas; Shawn and Angel Hughes and Grif, Cisco, Texas; Tim Hughes, Topeka; Lisa and Mike Blodgett, Republic, Mo.; Jonathan Blodgett, Springfield, Mo., and fiancee Jessica Riggs; Marisa and Bryan Keene and Paige, Springfield, Mo.; Kirby and John Gould and Katie, Olathe; and Ginny Gould, Fort Worth, Texas.
