U-234 BOE accepts several resignations

The USD 234 Board of Education conducted its regular meeting on Monday, June 7.

Jana Shaver, R-Independence, a retired school teacher who is running for reelection to the Kansas State Board of Education, gave a brief presentation and answered questions from board members. Shaver represents District 9, which covers 14 total counties and six partial counties in Southeast Kansas.

During the meeting, a representative from each USD 234 school gave a year-end report on their respective school's site council. The board approved members of site councils at Fort Scott High School and Fort Scott Middle School for the 2010-11 school year.

The board also approved a schedule change at FSHS that will include a Grab and Go Breakfast as part of the first passing period. The board approved the payment of dues to the Kansas Association of School Boards and the legal assistance fund. The board approved Hartford Insurance as the district's provider for workers' compensation insurance; 5 Corners Mini Mart as the provider of fuel for district vehicles; and Shepherd Team Auto Plaza as the service provider for district vehicles.

The board approved summer camps, handbooks for Winfield Scott and Eugene Ware elementary schools, and an increase in fees for the FSMS Project ART program from $8 to $10.

The board also reviewed the year-end district enrollment count report and approved the following employment matters:

* A final resolution for the non-renewals of Jana Carpenter, a Title I teacher at Winfield Scott, and Joshua Gier, a math teacher at FSMS.

* Accepted the resignations of Karri Stumfoll, bus driver, Robin Hartman, Winfield Scott nurse, Carrie Miller, fourth grade teacher at Eugene Ware, Robert Sieberns, automotive technology teacher at FSHS, and Allison Sieberns, Title I teacher aide at Eugene Ware.

* Approved a change of assignment for Lois Herman, Literacy through Technology teacher at Winfield Scott.

* Approved a change of contract for Kerrie Wilson and Jeanise Malone, central office secretaries.

* Approved the employment of licensed personnel and classified employees at FSHS, FSMS, Winfield Scott, Eugene Ware and the Fort Scott Preschool Center, as well as central office classified employees, food service classified employees, and transportation classified employees. The board also hired Pam Hutchison as a bus driver.

* Approved the transfer of Tyana Maiseroulle, Winfield Scott at-risk teacher, to the position of fifth grade teacher at Eugene Ware.

The board also conducted an executive session to discuss personnel matters for nonelected personnel and to discuss matters relating to employer-employee negotiations whether or not in consultation with the representative or representatives of the body or agency.
