Smith takes 2 titles; Mann, Snyder win gold

Tuesday, June 1, 2010
WICHITA -- Tribune Area athletes picked up four more gold medals at the Kansas State Track and Field Championships here Saturday, bringing the weekend's total to four for athletes from Jayhawk-Linn and Uniontown high schools.

Uniontown senior Abbie Smith won two events, taking home the Class 2A State title in both long jump and the 100-meter hurdles. Jayhawk-Linn senior Briar Snyder was able to win the Class 2A boys' 110-meter hurdles after winning the championship in Class 3A in 2009. These are added to the State championship in long jump taken by Jayhawk senior Steven Mann on Friday.

Friday's events were covered in Saturday's Weekend Herald-Tribune.

Smith picked up her first State title in long jump on her fifth jump, going 17 feet, 9 1/2 inches, her best effort of the season by 4 1/4 inches. Continuing her season-long dominance in the event, Smith won the title by 10 1/4 inches. In her previous three years, Smith had finished second as a freshman and junior and third as a sophomore. Former Eagle Emily Aikins, now competing for Jayhawk-Linn, picked up her first State medal with a seventh-place mark of 15' 7".

The top seven finishers medal at State.

Smith also turned in a time of 15.46 seconds, another season's best, in winning her first hurdles crown and sixth State medal. Jayhawk-Linn senior Morgan Eastwood was third in 16.05, which was also her year's best. In between was Oakley's Dayna Kuhlman, who turned in a 15.81.

Snyder won the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 14.93, beating Inman's Jason Friesen by half a second. It was the fifth individual medal as a high-school athlete. He was denied a sixth when he was called for a "hurdle violation" in the 300-meter hurdles final.

Mann picked up his eighth individual State medal as he took second in triple jump to Herington's Tyler Barber, one day after the two finished in the opposite order in long jump. Barber went 47 feet, 1/4 inch on his second jump in the preliminaries. Mann took over second when he went 45' 1 1/2" in his fifth jump, then went 46 even on his final attempt.

Medals continued to come to area athletes as the day went on. Jayhawk senior Taylor Dawson won her fourth individual State medal in her third different sport when she finished second in the girls' 800-meter run in 2:24.79. Katelyn Henderson of Olpe was the winner in 2:23.92.

Dawson was Class 3A State champion in long jump her freshman year, sixth in that event as a sophomore and finished fourth in the 400 meters last year.

Eastwood and Dawson added to their medal totals when they took part in the 4x400-meter relay finals. Chelsea Beckman, Meriel Long , Eastwood and Dawson turned in a time of 4:14.54 to finish third with Bennington winning in 4:09.95 and Oakley taking second in 4:14.54. This was the second State medal for Beckman after picking up her first earlier in the day, the third -- all in relays -- for Long, Dawson's 10th and Eastwood's 13th as the latter two have been on six relay medalist teams.

Jayhawk-Linn's boys 4x100 team picked up third place in 44.24 seconds. Osborne won in 44.63 and Colgan was second in 43.85. Mann, Bryce Northcutt, Dylan Thyer and Snyder were on the team. It was Mann's 11th State medal, Snyder's ninth, Thyer's third after winning an individual medal earlier in the day, and Northcutt's first.

Eastwood finished fourth in the girls' 300-meter hurdles finals -- which was medal No. 12 since it was held before the 4x400 relay -- with a time of 48.51 seconds. Emily Girard of Osborne was the winner in 46.32.

Junior Shelby Krull won her first State medal with a fifth-place height of 8' 6" in girls' pole vault. She was placed there after winning a tie-breaker with Tiffany Veer of Elbing Berean Academy. Keegan Williams of Shawnee Maranatha Academy set a new Class 2A State record in winning at 11' 4".

Thyer finished seventh in the 400-meter dash in 51.98 seconds. Austin Riggs of Colgan was the winner in 48.66.

Beckman took seventh in girls' discus with a mark of 110' 1". Uniontown's Jacy Ermel finished 15th with a mark of 92' 4". The winner was Dani Williams of Plainville at 125 feet even.

Jayhawk-Linn's 4x100-meter relay team missed out on its fourth consecutive medal when it finished eighth in finals in 56.67. Washington County was the winner in 52.05.

Ermel also took part in girls' shot put and finished 12th at 33' 11". Samantha Legleiter of LaCrosse was the winner at 41' 1 1/4".

Long finished 13th in the 1,600 meters in 5:59.80. Henderson won that race in 5:24.99.

The 100-meter dashes were the only running events which held both preliminaries and finals on Saturday. Mann finished with the 11th best time in preliminaries in 11.46 and did not advance to the finals.

Both Jayhawk-Linn teams finished in the top 10 in team standings. The boys finished fifth, scoring 35 points, while the girls were sixth with 29 points. Bennington won the boys' title with 56 points followed by Osborne with 43, Colgan 42 and Berean Academy with 41. Olpe girls won their second team title of the decade with 47 points followed by Bennington with 39, Oakley 31 1/2, WaKeeney 31 and Peabody 30.

Uniontown's girls finished tied for 12th with LaCrosse and Hill City. Uniontown's boys did not score any points.
