GIRARD -- Fort Scott High School's baseball team rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the championship game of the Girard Class 4A Regional Tournament here Friday night to prevail 7-4 and earn the program's seventh trip to a state tournament.

In the semifinals earlier in the day, the top-seeded Tigers (12-8) got by fourth-seeded Labette County 1-0.

Fort Scott will be the No. 5 seed in what appears to be a wide-open Class 4A State Tournament. The Tigers' first-round game at 1:30 Friday in Salina will see them face Kansas City Bishop Ward (13-6). The only team in the tournament with fewer than 6 losses is the top seed, Silver Lake, which is 19-0 and the defending Class 3A State Champion.

Semifinal: Fort Scott 1, Labette County 0.

The only run of the game scored in the sixth inning. Cole Clayton singled to lead off the inning. Jaret Thorpe's sacrifice bunt moved Clayton to second, where he scored on Alex Pemberton's double.

Matt Carillo finished up a complete-game one-hitter by getting a strikeout, a fly out to center, and another strikeout to end the game. Carillo walked one and struck out 11.

Labette County's only hit was a leadoff double by Seibert leading off the fourth. He was the only Grizzly go advance past first base and was stranded at third.

Pemberton was 2 for 3 for the Tigers at the plate. Clayton, Carillo and Jeremy Hull had the Tigers' other hits.

Second-seeded Indy got by No. 6 Chanute, 5-4, in the second semifinal to set up the championship match-up.

Championship: Fort Scott 7, Independence 3.

The Bulldogs (11-10) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Dalton Shaffer singled with one out and traded places with Dustin Oliver on a fielder's choice. Zach Snodgrass came up and hit a 2-run home run to put Indy on the board.

The inning continued with Nick Long drawing a walk. Jimmy Dierks reached on an error. Dylan Kemp's single plated Long with the third run.

The 'Dogs were in position to extend the lead, getting runners on first and second with two out. Head coach B.J. Pruitt brought Alex Pemberton to pitch and he struck Snodgrass out to end the inning.

Indy also got two on with one out in the top of the fourth. But a flyout and another Snodgrass strikeout ended that inning.

The Tigers rallied to tie the score in the bottom of the fourth. Miley Karleskint doubled to lead off the inning. Carillo followed with a single and Hull drew a walk to load the bases.

With two out, Clayton drew a walk to force in Karleskint. Thorpe followed with a single that plated Carillo and Hull.

Indy got three runners on in the top of the fifth. One was picked off second. The other two were stranded when Carillo struck out Easton Juilan to end the inning.

A pair of home runs by Tiger seniors put the Tigers in control in the bottom of the fifth. Josh Durossette's leadoff double came ahead of Karleskint's blast. Carillo reached on an error which Hull made Indy pay for with hit two-run shot with one out.

Indy loaded the bases with two out in the top of the sixth. Carillo returned to the mound and got a grounder back to himself to end the threat.

Kemp led off the top of the seventh with a double but was stranded on third to end the game on a 4-3 put out and back-to-back strikeouts.

Pemberton, the winning pitcher, allowed 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 7 in 4 innings. Carillo pitched 1 1/3 innings for the save, allowing 1 hit and striking out 2.
