U.S. Cellular bringing 3G service to Kansas

Friday, May 14, 2010

U.S. Cellular recently announced that 3G Mobile Broadband service will be coming to Kansas by the end of this summer.

The network upgrade will deliver data to customers 10 times faster on their wireless phones -- at no additional cost -- through Evolution-Data Optimized (EVDO) technology, commonly refered to as 3G.

With 3G speeds, browsing the Internet on a wireless phone will be similar to the experience on a home computer, with web pages opening faster and the added capability to send and receive large e-mail attachments. Average download speeds will be about 800 kilobits per second, according to a news release.

In addition to faster Internet access on the phone, customers can visit their U.S. Cellular retail store to purchase wireless modems that bring 3G speeds to their laptops, ensuring they have options to stay connected while traveling around the country or just across town, a statement from the company said.

"Our customers are used to high-speed connections at home and now we are bringing that experience to them on the go," Dorsey Ragland, the director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Kansas, said. "3G Mobile Broadband helps our customers stay connected to the information that's important to them."

Along with faster access to the latest news, weather and sports, U.S. Cellular customers will have new applications for their phones, such as mobile e-mail, an advanced mobile web browser, 3-D games and MobiTV with channels that include ABC News, ESPN and TLC.
