Richard Donald Fitzsimmons, 80, of Fort Scott, died Tuesday afternoon at the Mercy Health Center.
He was born Sept. 20, 1929 in Allen County, Kan., the son of Alan Edwin and Elsie Alice (Megaffin) Fitzsimmons.
He married Norma Jean Wilson, Aug. 16, 1950 in Everest, Kan. She survives of the home.
He was a member of the Kansas National Guard and worked for the Guard as a Unit Supervisor until his retirement in 1984.
After his retirement, Richard sold real estate for Hammon's Realty. He also worked as an Assistant Cashier for the City State Bank for four years.
He graduated from Fort High School with the class of 1947, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife Norma, Richard is survived by three sons; David Fitzsimmons of St. Roberts, Mo., Mike Fitzsimmons of Nashville, Tenn., Kevin Fitzsimmons of Tulsa, Okla., a daughter; Julie Townsend of Fort Scott, Kan., a sister, Marjorie Cunningham of Dallas, Texas, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers; Alan Dean Fitzsimmons, Kenneth Fitzsimmons, and Norman Fitzsimmons.
Rev. Paul Babcock will conduct funeral services 10 a.m. Monday, May 10, 2010 at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at the Fort Scott National Cemetery, with military honors being conducted by the Olson-Frary-Burkhart Veteran's of Foreign Wars Memorial Detail at the cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday evening, May 9, 2010 from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
