Coffeyville sweep ends Greyhounds' season

Monday, May 3, 2010
This fourth-inning single by Alix Price drove in Megan Barrager with the first run of the second game of a playoff doubleheader at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex Sunday afternoon. However, this was the only run the Greyhounds scored in a 2-1 loss that allowed visiting Coffeyville to take a 2-0 sweep in a best-of-3 Region VI Division II District D playoff. A crucial throwing error in the seventh inning of a tied game allowed visiting Coffeyville to score what turned out to be the series-winning run as the Red Ravens swept Fort Scott Community College 2-0 in a best-of-3 Region VI Division II District D first-round playoff series at the Betty Ruth Willard Complex Sunday afternoon.

After the series was postponed Saturday due to rain, Coffeyville, the No. 9 seed, won the first game 7-4 and took the second 2-1.

The Ravens (20-25) will play Johnson County in the first round of bracket play this weekend in Wichita. The tournament from this point on is double-elimination with four remaining teams (Kansas' 16 Division II teams were split into two districts, each of which will send a representative to the national tournament).

The Greyhounds (17-24) scored their only run of the second game in the fourth inning. Megan Barrager beat out the pitcher's throw to first base. The throw went into right field, allowing Barrager to reach third. She came in on Alix Price's single up the middle.

Although the 'Hounds had two runners on with one out later in the inning, they were unable to bring either home. They also had two on with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth and couldn't drive them in.

Coffeyville tied the score in the top of the sixth. Taylor Medler led off the inning with a double. Pitcher Brittany Washington made a throwing error on Shandi Crossley's bunt, which allowed Medler to score.

Megan Hoppenstedt led off the seventh with a ground-ball single to right. Courtney Shald bunted her over to second. Samantha Lambrecht grounded to Washington who threw to first for the out. But first baseman Marie Crowley then tried to throw out Lambrecht, who was only a a couple of steps away from third when she threw the ball. The throw went over Brittney Boyd's head, allowing Hoppenstedt to score.

Relief pitcher Stormy Perkins, who put the 'Hounds down in order in the sixth, did so again in the seventh to preserve the victory for Coffeyville.

Raven starting pitcher Jossie Grubbs allowed 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 2 in the first 5 innings. Perkins had 1 strikeout in 2 perfect innings of work.

Washington allowed 1 earned run on 6 hits. She didn't walk anyone and struck out 4 as she tossed a complete game.

No player on either side had more than one hit in the contest.

Coffeyville scored the first 2 runs of the opener in the top of the second inning. Fort Scott got one in the third when Paige Colburn drove in Price with a single up the middle.

The Ravens added 1 in the fourth and 3 in the fifth to make it a 6-1 game. But Cassie Sharon's 3-run home run in the bottom of the fifth brought Fort Scott within 2.

The Ravens scored an additional run in the sixth. The 'Hounds were able to get only one more baserunner -- Price reached on a sixth-inning single -- the rest of the contest.

Price was the only Greyhound with 2 hits in the game. Shald, Erin Monday, Amber Allen had 2 hits each for the Ravens. Shald, the No. 9 batter in the order, drove in two runs with singles in the second and fourth. Allen belted a 2-run double in the fifth.

Jakey Dobbs pitched every inning for Coffeyville, allowing 7 hits and no walks. She struck out one.

Sharon was Fort Scott's staring pitcher and allowed 6 runs on hits in 4 2/3 innings. She didn't walk anyone and struck out 7. Washington finished up, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and a walk while striking out 3.
