Twins killing: Maycumbers boost Tigers in sweep of Independence
Fort Scott High's softball team has two injured players and five freshmen on its varsity roster. So it's not much of a surprise that a pair of freshmen helped lead the Tigers to a Southeast Kansas League sweep of Independence at Don Hewett Field Tuesday.
Freshmen outfielders Sidney and Shelby Maycumber -- twin sisters -- were a combined 4 for 8 with 5 runs batted in and scoring 4 times in an 8-inning 9-7 victory in the opener. Sidney was also 3 for 4 with 2 RBI while scoring twice in an 8-7 win in the nightcap.
In both games, the Tigers (3-3 SEK, 3-5 overall) rallied from behind and won when Sidney Maycumber hit walk-off home runs.
"Sidney did something I haven't seen in 35 years of playing or coaching," head coach Alvin Metcalf said. "She hit two two-run walk-off home runs. The twins helped snatch two victories for us."
Independence (2-4, 2-4) led 6-0 after one inning and 7-0 going into the bottom of the seventh of the opener. The Tigers scored 7 times in the bottom of the seventh, tying it when Shelby Maycumber hit a 3-run triple.
In the eighth, Jenna Harper reached base on a lead-off error and Sidney Maycumber hit her home run.
Sidney and Shelby Maycumber each went 2 for 4 while Kenzie Heatherly was 2 for 3. Harper was also the winning pitcher as she allowed 3 earned runs on 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6.
The second game went more back and forth with the Bulldogs taking a 7-6 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh.
Kelsey Middleton pinch hit in the bottom of the inning and hit a single to center. Sidney Maycumber then came up and hit a ball that rolled to the right-field fence. Middleton scored the tying run easily and Maycumber was able to score as the throw back from the fence couldn't get back to the infield in time to prevent her score.
Sidney Maycumber was 3 for 4 with a double, a triple and the home run. Morgan Tourtillott was 2 for 2, scoring twice. Jade Weeter went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI.
Harper allowed no earned runs on 6 hits and 2 walks with 8 strikeouts.
