Fort Scott varsity boys 3rd at Labette County

ALTAMONT, Kan. -- Fort Scott High School's track and field teams opened their season with a meet at Labette County Thursday. There were both varsity and junior varsity meets held.

Fort Scott's boys finished third in varsity competition with 68 points. Iola won the meet with 104 followed by Chanute with 96.

Tiger varsity girls finished ninth. The JV boys were seventh and the JV girls tied for fifth.

The varsity boys had three event wins. Griffin Knopp picked up two of those as he cleared 6 feet, 8 inches in high jump and went 40' 5 3/4" in triple jump. Colt Bartlett picked up the other victory as he went 43' 5" in shot put while teammate Drew Bryant finished second at 43 feet even. Bartlett also had a second-place medal as he went 130' 6" in discus.

Brady Fink picked up a pair of third-place finishes as he cleared 5' 8" in high jump and went 37' 4 3/4" in triple jump. Knopp was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 45.92 seconds.

Brett Hartman was fifth in discus with a mark of 120' 4". Cody McGehee was sixth in shot at 39 feet even. Evan Williams was sixth in the 300 hurdles in 47.63. Pierce Reinbolt was sixth in the 1,600-meter run in 5:21. Robert Sellers rounds out the results with a sixth-place time of 12:12 in the 3,200 meters.

The highest individual finishers for the varsity girls was the second-place mark of 108' 4" by Megan McDermed in javelin. McDermed was also third in discus at 99' 9" with Marliss Allen fourth at 95' 3".

Mallory Shelton finished third in triple jump with a mark of 31' 7 3/4", fourth in high jump at 4' 8" and fifth in the 400 meters in 1:10.16.

David Goff won JV boys' shot put with a mark of 35' 7" and took second in javelin at 122' 3". Scott Frank had a second-place finish in discus at 87' 2" and Jonathan Stark was second in long jump at 16' 4 /2".

Stark was also sixth in triple jump at 31' 6" and Nick Nuzum was sixth in long jump at 15' 2".

Katrina Yakel won girls' JV long jump with a mark of 13 feet even. Paige Denton won the 1,600-meter run and the Tigers' 4x800-meter relay team had a time of 12:40 to finish first.

Other medalists were Yakel, fourth in the 100 meters in 13:80, Rikki Buller, fifth in the 1,600 in 7:13, and Karley Nelson, sixth in shot put at 23' 10".

The next varsity meet will be Friday at Paola, Kan. The next JV event is scheduled for April 12 at Chanute.
