UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown's softball team split a non-league doubleheader against Yates Center here Monday, losing the first game 5-4 but winning the second 4-3.

"Both games ended in the seventh inning with the same situation: A runner on third base with two outs," Uniontown head coach Alan Shinn said. "In the first game, Yates Center made the defensive stop for the last our of the game. But in the second game, we got the hit that allowed us to score the winning run."

Yates Center scored 4 runs in the top of the fifth inning in the opener to go up 5-2. The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the inning but couldn't get any closer.

Tayler Shook had 2 hits, both triples, and also pitched all 7 innings, allowing no hits and 4 walks while striking out 7. Hope Jurgensen also had 2 hits.

The Wildcats scored all 3 of their second-game runs in the first inning. Uniontown scored single runs in the first, third, sixth and seventh.

Ithaca Marlier allowed 5 hits but no walks and struck out 2. Shook had 2 hits. Tiffany Poyner stole 3 bases.

This was the first time the Eagles got to play this season after their first two dates had been rained out. They will go to Oswego for a Three Rivers League doubleheader next Thursday.
