Kid wrestlers results from Sub-district 1

Thursday, March 18, 2010
The Fort Scott Wrestling Club participated in post-season action this past weekend in Pittsburg in the Sub-district 1 South Tournament. Leading the way for the 13 youth wrestlers were Trey Holston and Jake Durossette, both winning their respective weight classes.

In his finals match, Holston won a close 3-2 decision over Gage Matlock from Chanute, an opponent that had beaten Holston earlier this year. Durossette had a dominating day with two technical falls on his road to a championship.

Four others also qualified to move on to wrestle this next weekend. Victor Hughes, Brendon Blackburn and John Metcalf all earned second-place finishes and JT Heckman finished fourth.

Hughes lost to defending state champion Dustin Williams from East Kansas 4-0. Blackburn got caught on his back and lost by fall to Mario Galvin from Cougar Wrestling Club. Metcalf lost 6-0 to Jake Bradley from Paola in their finals matches.

Heckman, in his third-place match, dropped a close overtime decision to Grant Hollingsworth from Kansas City Wrestling Club, 5-4.

Five other tiger youth missed making the trip to Topeka by one match but wrestled in a fifth-place match in case of injury to a qualifying competitor. Graham Hathaway, Gage Lopp, Coby Burchett, and John Hughes all finished fifth and Brian Stumfoll placed sixth.

"We had a lot of close matches that I thought we could have won but it seemed like we ran out of time," club head coach Alvin Metcalf said. "We have one of the toughest sub-districts in the state but having five kids one match away from qualifying is heartbreaking."

Two wrestlers also competed on the day, Wyatt "Monkey" DeHaven and Gavin Evans, but did not place.

"Monkey and Gavin had a rough day and very tough brackets but they will come back strong for us next year,", assistant Dustin Beisley said.

The wrestlers will leave Friday to compete in the second part of the post-season process by traveling to Topeka to wrestle Saturday in the District 1 Championships hoping to earn a trip to the State Championships.

"This week is very important in our training," Metcalf said. "We have to correct our mistakes, get that last bit of conditioning and come in, like we do everyday, and take care of business because if we're not focused this could be the last weekend for some of them."
