Arcadians grieve over loss of numerous friends

Tuesday, March 16, 2010
Autumn Leaves met on Monday, March 8 with 15 present. Because of bad weather and vacation time, it had been two months since all had been together. Jerry Coonrod who brought his helper, Jim Kunsler, as a guest, blessed the food. Herman Tyler was a first timer and came with Gary Peterson. We were happy to see our newest member back again, Alta Carpenter from Missouri. The others were Patty Peterson, Mary Lee and Jack Payne, Helen Sisney, Judy Rawlings, Mary V. Shead and President Lilly Coonrod who conducted the business meeting.

Jan Mayfield came from Arma Care Center to take blood pressure readings. She is a former Arcadian now living in Fort Scott. Unable to stay for dinner, she left when all were checked and gave us note pads, pens and a pink bucket of candy. We give thanks to the Care Center and the service they provide.

Alta Carpenter saw what a poor way we had to play Bingo using the table cover for the board and a jelly jar for the numbers, presented the group with a new bingo cage and regular card board. We thank her for her thoughtfulness. In turn she had the lucky number in the game with the Easter eggs.

The birthday song was dedicated to Mary Lee Payne, who turned 73 and Helen Sisney, who turned 81 this month. Business meeting was opened with Flag Salute and Lord's Prayer. The front-attic window, which will be repaired soon, was a topic of discussion. The Christmas money that each gave instead of an exchange was spent for groceries and presented to a grandmother in town who is raising several grandchildren. The club received a thank you note from the lady and her family.

The Arcadia Memory book that was made by Susie Stelle and Barbara (Gardner) Scott was given to Autumn Leaves Senior Citizens to share with folks who know the writers of the hisitory and the pictures therein. It is a fine keepsake.

Readings were given by Patty Peterson, Alta Carpenter and Mary Lee Payne. All played bingo until each won a prize. Mary V. was Blackout winner. We welcome anyone who would like to share dinner and fun with us each month on the second Monday. Doors open at 11 a.m. each meeting day.

Robert Harold White, 85, formerly of Fort Scott died March 9, 2010 in Hutchinson, Kan. He married Margaret Ballard Roufs in April 1969 in Nevada, Mo. She survives of the home and he is survived by her children, Antontte (Tony) Roufs of Hutchinson and Buddy Roufs, Mapleton, Kan. Burial was Saturday, March 13 in Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Scott. The Ballards and Roufs are well known in past years by Arcadia residents.

Friday night, March 12, Ralph and Cindy Shead brought supper to his former Shead home to share with his mother, Mary V. Shead. The next day the couple drove to Nowata, Okla., to attend the funeral of Cindy's uncle and they spent some time with her Dad, R.H. Geurin.

On Thursday, March 11, Delton Watt, Jr. left Fayette, Mo., and stopped for a visit at the home of his brother Bill and Karen Watt in Independence, Mo. On to Overland Park, he and brother, Tom Watt, went to lunch and took a carry in meal to Phyllis Watt who was at the office. The two men then came to Arcadia bringing fresh made bread pudding from Karen Watt for the dinner that was shared in Arcadia. The men were busy doing things for their mother including taking her shopping. They returned to their Missouri homes on Friday afternoon. Mae is pleased to tell that every day she hears from her four sons via telephone.

Arcadia friends are sorry to hear of the death of Kenneth Carl "Tug" Silvers, 79, on Friday March 12, 2010 in the Nevada Medical Center. He was born in Coalvale, Kan. to Rollie and Rosa B. Davenport Silvers. He was an Arcadia High School graduate in 1948. He married Helen Buchanan on May 29, 1952 who survives of the home. Her sister is Thelma Medley. Often the Silvers would come to Arcadia and with friends would enjoy meals at the Bearcat. Condolances to the family.

Word was received here of the death of Nina Briggs White after a lingering illness in Oklahoma. She is the daughter of Emory Briggs of Nowata, Okla. and the late Shirley Briggs, all formerly of Arcadia. Our sympathy goes to her family.

The first Sunday morning after the time change, only one person forgot to change her clock in order to be on time at Arcadia Christian church. After a phone call she soon arrived. Special first timers for the worship hour were Karen Mizie and son Sam Truesdell of Mulberry and Jamison Walrod, grandson of Pastor Charles and Willa Cable.

His scripture was taken from the Books of Acts, Ephesians and Colossians. He first sang a solo accompanying himself on piano. Sermon was entitled Barnabas Son of Consolation. A birthday offering was given for Jamie Watt and Dawson Watt

On Feb.1, Jerry and Lilly Coonrod took a cruise on Royal Caribbean's Radiance of the Seas. It was an 11-day cruise departing from San Diego, Calif. They visited Cabo San Lucan, Mexico, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarita, Acapulco, Zihreatanejo and Manzanilla, Mexico. They returned to Arcadia on Feb. 13.

Open Door Mission had a Sweatheart dinner on Feb. 14, at the Community Center. Pictures were taken and given to each couple. A game was played called Bible sweethearts, matching Bible men and women together. Another game was played from l Corinthians 13:3-8 in regard to love. Chicken dinner was served to all on beautifully decorated tables. This church has invited Arcadia Christian Church to Easter Breakfast 8:30 a.m., in Community Center on April 4. On March 29 Open Door will sponsor a Passover meal in the Community Center at 6 p.m. Dinner tickets are $6 per person.
