Starlite FCE learns to 'dress proffessionally on a budget'

Friday, March 12, 2010
Fourteen Starlite Family and Community Education Unit members met with nine other ladies at Cavalry Crossing on Thursday, Feb. 18. After refreshments, Bourbon County Agent Ann Ludlum introduced the special speaker, Kathy McEwan, the Allen County Agent. Ms. McEwan presented the lesson, "Dressing Professionally on a Budget."

Ms. McEwan stressed how first impressions are important, and that we all want to put our best foot forward when meeting new people. This includes being neat and clean and dressing appropriately. Business casual does not mean sloppy. Clothing should be neatly pressed. Tattoos and piercings should not be inappropriately displayed. We should also go easy on scents because they can affect some people's well being.

Ms. McEwan demonstrated how accessories can change the appearance from casual to classic. Accessories can provide many different "looks" to a basic garment such as a white shirt-blouse. Some of the accessories shown were scarves, necklaces, pins, handbags, shoes, and hats.

Following this presentation by Ms. McEwan, Unit President, Joan Issac, called the Starlite business meeting to order with the Club Collect and the flag salute. The Secretary's report was read and approved. Following a lengthy discussion about what constitutes Volunteer Hours, roll call was taken by each lady telling how she volunteers in the community.

Treasurer, Clarice Russell, reported on the balance in the Treasury. Clarice moved that $30 fee given to the Sunshine Committee for necessary expenditures. Doris Ericson seconded the motion. Motion carried.

The Bourbon County Fair Board is looking for donations to help with the expense of ribbons, medals, and trophies for the 2010 fair. Betty Johnson moved that we give $40 to this cause. Nolene Whiteside seconded the motion. Motion carried.

The kickoff for Walk Kansas was held in the Round Room on the FSCC campus at 9 a.m., on March 6. Walk Kansas will continue until May 1. Starlite will have one team participating this year under the name, "Stamina by Starlite." Nolene White side is captain with team players, Lois Williams, Joan Isaac, Doris Ericson, Marge Stringer, Jackie Warren, and Wilma Endy .

Bourbon County will host F.C.E. Recognition Day, involving eight counties from southeast Kansas, on May 6. Approximately 150 people are expected to attend. Members are seeking "fillers" for goody-bags. This event will be held on the campus of the college. Early reservations are recommended. The registration fee for F.C.E. members will be $ 10. For non-members the fee will be $12.50. This covers the cost of the program and the lunch. For more information call (620) 223-3720.
