3 from Fort Scott among winners

The Bourbon County Arts Council recently announced the winners of the 18th Annual Fine Arts Competition and Exhibit.

Local winners include Bobbi Kemna, Fort Scott, who won first place in the ceramics category and honorable mention in that same category; John Weikel, Fort Scott, who won an honorable mention in the drawing and graphics category; and Barbara Gibson, who won first place in the jewelry category.

Other winners from the region include Al Letner, Pittsburg, who won the Best of Show prize in the three-dimension category; Elizabeth Corbett, Iola, who won first place in the drawing and graphics category; Ryan Moran, Iola, who won an honorable mention in the mixed media category; Rita Beckford, Paola, who won first place in the painting category; Carolynn Burns, Pittsburg, who won first place in the photography category; Paul Smith, Pittsburg, who won an honorable mention in the photography category; J. Karl Lipscomb, who won first place in the sculpture category; Sandi Shumaker, Nevada, Mo., who won first place in the watercolor category; and Linda Thury-Rogers, Nevada, Mo., who won an honorable mention in the watercolor category.

The remaining winners are Linda Teeter, Joplin, Mo., who won the Best of Show prize in the two-dimension category; Bob Schyler, Rich Hill, Mo., who won an honorable mention in the jewelry category and first place in the mixed media category; and Diane Stoltz, Kansas City, Mo., who won an honorable mention in the painting category.

A total of $1,550 in cash prizes were presented to first place winners in each of the featured categories, the two Best in Show winners, and the winner of a popular vote. First place winners each received $100; the Best in Show winners each received a $200 prize; and the winner of the popular vote was awarded $50.

The exhibit will be open from noon to 7 p.m. Friday at the Scottish Rite Temple, 110 S. Main St. There is no admission charge.
