Greyhound baseball plays home openers

Fort Scott Community College's baseball team finally got a chance to play some home games as they hosted Southwestern Iowa for a three-day series at Lions Field.

The Greyhounds had tried to play at home a few times before but had to cancel due to weather.

The Greyhounds (5-5) swept Thursday's doubleheader with Southwestern. The Spartans swept (2-7) on Friday. Then Highland came down to make Saturday's action a baseball triangular. The Scotties beat the Spartans 10-0 in the first game, then beat the Greyhounds. Fort Scott then closed out the series by downing Southwestern.

Thursday: Fort Scott 7-8, Southwestern 6-7.

All the runs in the opener were scored in the first four innings with the 'Hounds taking the lead for good with 2 in the bottom of the fourth.

Fort Scott High grad Jared Leek, a sophomore, and freshman Dylan Banach were both 2 for 3 for the Greyhounds. Leek hit a home run and drove in drove in 3 runs while Banach drove in 2 runs.

William Kilpatrick pitched 3 innings of relief to get the victory. He allowed 2 hits and struck out 5. Michael Armstrong earned the save.

Southwestern scored 2 in the top of the seventh of the nightcap to take a 7-6 lead. But the Greyhounds scored two in the bottom half of the inning.

Gavin Stark had a home run and a double among his 3 hits. He scored 2 runs. Sophomore Stuart Jeck was 2 for 3 and drove in 3 runs. Banach and Stark scored twice.

Armstrong was the winning pitcher in the second game as his teammates picked him up after he struggled in the top of the seventh.

Friday: Southwestern 11-12, Fort Scott 5-4.

A 6-run third inning in the opener propelled the Spartans in the opener. Southwestern cranked out 15 hits, although 13 of them were singles.

Stark, who had another home run, had half of Fort Scott's 6 hits. He drove in 2 runs and scored twice.

In the second game, Southwestern broke open a tight game by scoring 2 in the sixth and 4 more in the seventh. This time, the Spartans had 14 hits.

Sophomore Brandon Davis was 3 for 4 with 3 RBI for the 'Hounds. Jeck and sophomore Kian Jost each scored twice.

Saturday: Fort Scott 5, Southwestern 4 (8 inn.).

Josh Samuelson had 2 hits for the Greyhounds, who had an otherwise-balanced lineup. Five players scored runs and seven players had base hits.

Sophomore Zach Weidant kept the Greyhounds in the game with four innings of relief work in which he allowed 3 hits and struck out 2. While he was in, the 'Hounds came back from a 4-1 deficit after 2 1/2 innings.

Kilpatrick was the winning pitcher as he pitched the top of the eighth, although he had a bit of trouble as he allowed a hit and 2 walks.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to play the Bethany junior varsity today in Lindsborg, although rain is in the forecast there for most of the day.

Wednesday, the 'Hounds will play a make-up game against Crowder. Thursday, Fort Scott will make up a game against Butler. Both games are set for 2 p.m. starts at Lions Field and will be single 9-inning games.
