The week of January 25th- 29th was Homecoming week at Fort Scott High School and there were many fun, exciting, and school-spirit events. In all the excitement, the high school's student council wanted to put together a fundraising effort for Haiti relief but incorporate it into Homecoming week activities. They wanted to do something that would include the entire student body and the faculty. So, 18 administrators, coaches, teachers, and staff members volunteered to participate in an activity that could possibly end in them receiving a "pie in the face." During the week, in front of the office, there were jars representing each volunteer and the students had the opportunity to place money in the jars of the teachers and staff. The person who received the most monies would take a "pie in the face" during the pep assembly that Friday before lunch. It was changed late in the week though, to where there would be three winners; an administrator, a coach, and teacher/staff member.
History teacher, Mr. Roger Leaming, lead the fundraiser all week, even into Friday morning. But, at the very last minute, an anonymous person gave a donation to put Officer Toby Nighswonger ahead of Mr. Leaming in the teacher/staff category. When it was all said and done, Mr. Rob McKim -- administrator, Mr. Jeff Armstrong -- coach, and Officer Nighswonger - teacher/staff, were the lucky winners of a "pie in the face." At the assembly, the "winners" received their pie one right after another. Mr. Armstrong disliked cleaning the messy pie off, but he said it was "for a good cause" so he didn't really mind. Mr. McKim actually didn't think he had a chance of winning. With there to only be one winner originally, he thought definitely another staff member would've won before him. Mr. Nighswonger, after he saw that Mr. Leaming had so much of a lead, didn't expect to win either. But, he wasn't very mad at the "anonymous donor" for putting him ahead right at the last moment. All in all, the three realized the importance and value of the fundraiser and were more than happy to take a pie for Haiti.
The students and teachers all seemed to really enjoy this event, but more importantly, money was raised during the whole process. With the money from the jars and help from the student council, a check was given to the Red Cross for an even $1,000. Overall, it was a fun, but very productive week, as all the funds were used for Haiti support.쇓
