Only four Greyhounds scored but all but 2 of those points were from the ones Fort Scott's (14-17) counted on all season. Valencia Kelly scored 26, Shadara Hampton -- last week's Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week -- added 17 and Brittany Demery had 16 points and 16 rebounds before fouling out.
The 'Hounds won for just the third time in their last 10 games. But the Thunderbirds -- who as recently as two weeks ago were nationally ranked -- dropped their fourth game in a row to finish at 24-7.
Cloud County's starting five scored only 31 points, 19 of those coming from Meriah Metoyer, who made 8 of 16 shots from the field. Brittany Griswold came off the bench to score 16 points on 8-of-13 field-goal shooting.
Fort Scott made 52 percent of its shots in the second half (12 of 23) as they held off the Thunderbirds. At one point in the second half, the Greyhounds led 52-43.
The Greyhounds will play in the quarterfinal round Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division champion Labette (28-3). This will be the first game of the day and the only one between two teams from the same division.
The Cardinals defeated Dodge City by a 77-53 score Tuesday night.
Labette defeated Fort Scott in both meetings this season. But if the 'Hounds can score another upset, they will play Sunday at 1 in a semifinal against the Independence-Hutchinson winner.
