Sub-State seeds set; Tigers hosting rare first-round doubleheader

Thursday, February 25, 2010
Sub-State tournament pairings were made official Wednesday afternoon with a twist on the usual first-round scenario for Fort Scott's teams.

Sub-States were drawn in Classes 4A, 3A, and 2A, Classes 6A and 5A will be drawn Saturday while Class 1A Sub-States will be determined by the outcome of this week's 1A Regional Tournaments.

Fort Scott is the only Southeast Kansas League school in the Osawatomie Class 4A Sub-State. And, for the first time that the Tribune is aware of, the boys and girls teams will be playing a first-round doubleheader Monday night.

Usually boys and girls first-round and semifinal games are played on different nights. This year in Class 4A, boys games are scheduled for Tuesday and Friday while girls are set for Monday and Thursday. Both championship games will be played Saturday.

However, Fort Scott and Paola happened to draw each other in both the girls' and boys' brackets. And in each case, the Tigers are the higher-seeded team. When this happens, the schools can opt to play a doubleheader.

Fort Scott and Paola will host their doubleheader Monday night. The girls game will tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30. The doubleheader will be on Monday night to keep the girls winner from having the disadvantage of having one day's less rest before its semifinal game.

Tiger girls drew the No. 2 seed with their 13-6 record. Paola is No. 7 with a record of 6-13. Fort Scott's boys are the No. 3 seed at 12-7 with Paola No. 6 at 8-11.

Fort Scott's boys came out on the good side of a coin toss with Spring Hill for the No. 3 seed as both teams had the same records. The only tie-breaker used is head-to-head play and the Tigers and Broncos did not face each other this season.

Ottawa and Anderson County will also play a Monday doubleheader. Ottawa's girls are the No. 1 seed with a 16-2 record while Anderson County is the No. 8 seed at 6-14. Ottawa's boys drew the No. 2 seed with their 15-3 mark. Anderson County boys are No. 7 with a mark of 6-14.

The other two first-round girls games on Monday have No. 3 Spring Hill (12-7) hosting No. 6 Osawatomie (6-12) and No. 4 Louisburg (11-8) hosting No. 5 Prairie View (7-12).

The other two first-round boys games will be played Tuesday night. No. 1 Osawatomie (17-2) faces No. 8 Prairie View (4-15) and No. 4 Spring Hill (12-7) hosts No. 5 Louisburg (11-8).

The semifinals will be played at Osawatomie Thursday (girls) and Friday (boys). The first game will be played between the teams with the greatest combined mileage from Osawatomie. With Fort Scott about 25 miles farther from Osawatomie than any other school in the field, expect any game involving the Tigers to be played first at 6 p.m. The other semifinal is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

If Fort Scott's girls win Monday, they would face the Spring Hill-Osawatomie winner. If Osawatomie upsets Spring Hill, there's a chance Fort Scott's game could be the 7:30 game depending on which two teams move into the other semifinal, which will involve the winner of Louisburg-Prairie View against the winner of Ottawa-Anderson County.

If Fort Scott's boys win Monday, they will square off against the winner of the Ottawa-Anderson County game at 6 p.m. Friday. The 7:30 matchup will have the winner of Osawatomie-Prairie View facing the winner of Spring Hill-Louisburg.

The girls championship will be played at Osawatomie at 6 p.m. Saturday with the boys championship to follow at about 7:30.

Uniontown and Jayhawk-Linn will both take part in the Oswego Class 2A Sub-State Tournament. All four girls games will be played Monday night with all four boys games scheduled for Tuesday.

Jayhawk-Linn's (14-6) girls drew the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will host Howard-West Elk (5-14) at 7 p.m. Monday. With a victory, the Jayhawks -- who went to the Class 3A State Tournament last season -- would face the winner of the game between No. 2 Oswego (14-5) and No. 7 Marmaton Valley (5-15) on Thursday night.

Uniontown's girls (13-7) are the No. 4 seed and will entertain No. 5 Sedan (11-8) Monday night at 7 p.m. If the Eagles win, they will face the winner of the contest between No. 1 Pittsburg Colgan (16-3) and No. 8 Humboldt (0-19) Thursday night.

Again, the teams with the highest combined mileage from Oswego will play first Thursday with the teams with the least combined mileage playing second. Game times are 6 p.m. and 7:30.

Jayhawk-Linn and Uniontown are on the same side of the boys' bracket. The Eagles are the No. 6 seed at 8-12 and will travel to face No. 3 Sedan (12-7) a 7 p.m. Tuesday night. Jayhawk-Linn is the No. 7 seed at 6-14 and will had to Colgan, the No. 2 seed at 16-3, Tuesday night. The winners of these games will face each other Friday night at Oswego.

The top side of the bracket will see No. 8 Marmaton Valley (6-14) travel to face top-seeded Oswego (16-3) and No. 5 West Elk (10-10) go to play No. 4 Humboldt (11-8). The winners of these games play Friday night at Oswego.

Saturday, the girls championship will tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys to follow at around 7:30 at Oswego.

Pleasanton's teams have already been eliminated from post season play. Pleasanton was moved down to Class 1A this season. Due to the fact that this class has almost twice as many schools as Class 2A, a Regional Tournament round is taking place this week.

Pleasanton is the host school for a 1A Regional. But the boys lost at home to Hartford Monday night, 56-51, and the girls lost on the road at Hartford Tuesday night, 49-15.

In the other boys gam Monday night, Southern Coffey County beat Marias des Cygnes Valley, 48-21. Top-seeded Crest and second-seeded Waverly drew byes.

Tuesday night in girls play, Marias des Cygnes Valley beat Crest 56-25. Top seed Southern Coffey County and No. 2 Waverly each had byes.

Thursday's boys semifinals at Pleasanton have No. 5 Hartford (6-12) taking on Crest (15-3) at 6 p.m. and No. 3 Southern Coffey County (12-8) facing Waverly (14-5) at 7:30.

Friday's girls semifinals at Pleasanton see No. 3 Hartford (9-9) facing Waverly (12-7) at 6 p.m. and No. 4 Marias des Cygnes (8-12) going up against Southern Coffey County (15-4) at 7:30.

The girls championship will be played Saturday at 6 p.m. in Pleasanton followed by the boys at 7:30. The champions of each tournament will advance to one Sub-State while the second-place teams will be sent to another.
