On Friday, two Public Forum Debate teams and four Lincoln-Douglas debators made their way to Topeka-Seaman High School to compete.
According to coach Brian Weilert, the long trip was made to compete against not only different, but larger Class 5A and 6A schools. Fort Scott is a Class 4A school.
The squad performed well as both PFD teams, one with Angel West and Chris Clay, the other with Ashley Allen and Tony Jackson, each finished 3-1 and medaled third and fifth places, respectively. Two of the four L-D debaters, Chase Rooks and Jeff Durbin, medaled with a 3-1 record as well.
Many more squad members returned to Topeka on Saturday to compete. The Tigers continued their winning ways as they put 22 events into the final round, earning medals. These individual successes allowed the Tiger squad to win the overall sweepstakes title by a wide margin, Weilert said.
More of the squad competed this weekend in another tournament at Gardner-Edgerton. The FSHS squad performed solidly at this competition as well. The Tigers advanced another 13 entries into the final round. This effort was rewarded with a second-place sweepstakes trophy.
In just the first three weeks of the season, the Tigers are in top form, winning four tournaments and earning trophies at four others. They have earned more than 100 individual medals and qualified 27 events to the State championship tournament. That is well over the allowed 16 entries that comprise a full State entry, according to Weilert.
"The rigorous eight tournaments in three weeks shows just how committed our team is to compete," he said. "The success they are having also shows just how deep the talent is on the squad. They truly expect to win every tournament they attend whether we are split in two or even three separate teams. We are nowhere near the level we know we can be at but as the season continues we will work hard and keep improving."
