Seniors Denzell Davis and Justin Sharp and freshman Tyler Sharp are the Tigers' qualifiers. They advanced from the Chanute Class 4A Regional Tournament, which was held here Friday and Saturday.
Team-wise, Fort Scott finished in eighth place with 90 1/2 points. Colubus won the team title with 141 1/2 points followed by Mulvane with 138 and Prairie View with 136. Southeast Kansas League champion Chanute finished fifth with 118 points.
Individually, the top four finishers in each weight class qualified for State.
Davis (30-8 this season) finished in second place at 119 pounds. He drew a first-round bye then pinned Weston Gilbreth of Anderson County in the quarterfinals. Davis then took a 7-1 decision over Tim Wrestler of Chanute in the semifinals. In the finals, Zac Sparr of Rose Hill pinned Davis.
Justin Sharp (36-9) also finished in second place. He pinned Joel Zwahlen of Columbus in the first round at 125 pounds. He took a 7-2 decision over Dalton Murdock of Parsons in the quarters and pinned Caleb Skinner of Anderson County in the semifinals. In the finals, Chanute's Troy Clark took an 8-2 decision.
Tyler Sharp (32-15) finished third at 103 pounds. He pinned Parsons' Joey Sanders in the first round and took a major decision, 13-4, over Freddy Shoemaker of Towanda-Circle in the quarters. Kyle Macy of El Dorado edged Sharp in the semis, 8-6.
In consolation, Sharp pinned Columbus' Jacob York in the semifinal and then pinned Cody Prince of Mulvane in the third-place match.
Other Fort Scott results in order of weight class:
* Freshman Victor Hughes (24-17 at 130) pinned Iola's Brent Clark in a first-round match. He was pinned by Josh Thoele of Prairie View in the quarterfinals. In consolation, Hughes pinned Billy Virtue of Parsons and Trey Thompson of Coffeyville before Kolby Fennewald of Mulvane took a 10-8 decision in the consolation semifinals.
* Senior Michael Durossette (16-20 at 135) took a 10-8 decision over Kody Crook of Anderson County in the first round. He lost an 11-8 decision to
Felix Santillano of Chanute in the quarterfinals. In consolation, Durossette took a 12-2 major decision over Colton Helton of Rose Hill. But Cooper Ratty of Prairie View won an 8-5 decision to end Durossette's run.
* Senior Blake Cowen (15-14 at 152) pinned Coffeyville's Cory Turner in the first round but was defeated by eventual Regional champion Sam Son of Chanute, 16-4, in the quarterfinals. Cowen then took a technical fall over Iola's Devin Culler before he was eliminated by Augusta's Brandon Swa via pinfall.
* Freshman John Metcalf (24-20 at 160) lost in the first round to Prairie View's Michael Dunlop on an 11-3 major decision. He took an 8-0 major decision over Bryce Long of Rose Hill in the first round of consolation by was eliminated on a 10-0 major decision by Columbus' Damion Tinnin.
* Sophomore Dane Cummings (20-15 at 171) drew a first-round bye. He was pinned in the quarterfinals by eventual Regional champ Jared McComb of Chanute to drop to consolation. There. he drew another bye then pinned Billy Teeters of Prairie View before he was eliminated via pin to Brendon DeLancy of Augusta.
* Junior Drew Bryant (24-20 at 285) pinned David Calisey of Mulvane in the first round. Marcus Ferguson of Anderson County pinned Bryant in the quarterfinal. IN consolation, Bryant pinned Bryce Baker of Labette County and took a 7-0 decision over Tanner Stanage of Prairie View. Chris Lyon of Iola eliminated Bryant on a 3-1 decision in overtime. Lyon went on to finish third.
Friday's action at Salina's Bicentennial Center begins at 10 a.m.
