Pemberton wins WSU scholarship

Tuesday, February 16, 2010
Alex Pemberton, a senior at Fort Scott High School, was recently named a winner of the 2010 Fran Jabara Scholarship in Entrepreneurship at Wichita State University. The competitive scholarship is one of the most prestigious at WSU and one of the largest entrepreneurship scholarships nationally.

Pemberton, who plans to major in entrepreneurship at WSU, has received honors in district Future Business Leaders of America competition, is involved in the student council, and is a member of the varsity baseball team. In addition to his school activities, he works at City State Bank and Bandera Stone, Inc.

Matthew Helmick of Rio Rancho, N.M., was also named a 2010 Jabara Scholarship recipient. His high school accomplishments include many awards at science and technology expositions and DECA competitions. He serves as captain of the varsity bowling team.

The two high school seniors, who were among four finalists for the scholarship, will each receive $20,000 over the next four years to attend WSU. To compete for the scholarship, students must have a minimum ACT score of 24, a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, and be a declared entrepreneurship major at WSU.

The Jabara Scholarship was established in 1998 and is named for Fran Jabara, former dean of the College of Business Administration at WSU. Along with the financial benefits, scholarship winners are also mentored by Jabara during their stay at the university.
